1st Test: B'desh look to avoid more embarrassment

Chittagong: Having given a miserable account of themselves in the limited overs contests against Pakistan, to say that Bangladesh face a tall order in the Test series which gets underway on Friday at Chittagong, would undoubtedly be a gross understatement. Mushfiqur Rahim's men were blanked 3-0 in the recently concluded one-day international (ODI) series, after having gone down in the preceding Twenty20 (T20) clash. The obvious cause of concern for the hosts would be the form of their batsmen, who failed to chase down a winning target of 178 in the third ODI, after being shot out for 91 in the first match of the series. Also, it would be hard for the ‘Tigers’ to draw inspiration from their Test record at the international level which is woeful to say the least. In the 71 Tests that they have been a part of since playing their inaugural match in late 2000, Bangladesh have won three, drawn seven and a lost a whopping 61 games.Their fate against Pakistan is no better; a cent per cent losing record in the six clashes thus far, which includes a couple of defeats at home. While the visitors have issues of their own in the batting department, they will be boosted by the performance of their bowlers, the pick of which was the mercurial Shahid Afridi who grabbed his seventh ODI five-wicket haul at Mirpur, in the opening match of the series.Bangladesh on the other hand will be hoping that the recall of dashing middle-order batsman, Mohammad Ashraful, will provide some stability to their otherwise brittle batting line-up as they get ready to defend their reputation which has taken a real beating of late.
