5-0 will make India No. 1 in ODIs

New Delhi: A 5-0 sweep of Sri Lanka in the ODI series starting July 5 will propel India from fourth place to top of the pile, knocking current table-toppers Australia off their perch. India held top spot in the ICC’s ODI rankings briefly in September 2009, but their struggles in England, Australia and Bangladesh have seen them slip since winning the 2011 World Cup. The upcoming series, to be played in Hambantota, Colombo and Pallekele, offers MS Dhoni’s team a chance – tough though it is – to reclaim the No. 1 spot. They can take confidence from their last two bilateral series on Sri Lankan soil. In 2008, Dhoni’s team won its first ODI series in Sri Lanka with a 3-2 margin, and a year later beat the hosts 4-1. Currently, Michael Clarke’s Australia is ranked No. 1 but own a lead of just one ratings point ahead of South Africa (118) and England (118) as a result of their 4-0 defeat in England recently. India are at fourth with 117 ratings points. At the conclusion of the series, the ICC will publish the annual update of the table which will discard the results of ODIs played prior to August 2010.ICC ODI Rankings (as of 19 July 2012)1 Australia 1192 South Africa 1183 England 1184 India 1175 Sri Lanka 1126 Pakistan 1037 West Indies 878 New Zealand 839 Bangladesh 6710 Zimbabwe 4611 Ireland 3612 Netherlands 1513 Kenya 8
