Dhoni vs Ganguly: Is Dhoni the best 'home Test' captain?

He has won the ODI World Cup, Twenty20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy and the Test mace - the only skipper to have ever done that, but Dhoni's last three years as India's Test skipper have added strength to the notion that he is India's best Test skipper only when leading in a home series.

India suffered their fourth successive Test series defeat abroad after their 0-1 loss to New Zealand in the two-match rubber. They have now lost 10 of their last 12 Tests abroad - the other two were drawn, a record that included two successive 0-4 whitewashes in England and Australia.

Dhoni's overseas loss rate worse than Ganguly's

Dhoni's Test captaincy record out of the country stands at 5 wins, 11 losses and 7 draws after the New Zealand tour - with those 11 defeats the most by an Indian captain. That gives Dhoni a loss rate of around 48 percent.

In comparison, Ganguly registered victories in 11 Tests while losing 10. Ganguly won or drew 18 of the 28 Tests he captained on foreign soil. And Dada's loss percentage stands at 35.71.

Dhoni a champion at leading in 'home Tests'

Dhoni has led India in 30 Tests at home, winning a staggering 21 of those while losing just three. In contrast, Ganguly's captaincy record at home reads 21 Tests, 10 won, 3 lost, 8 draw.
