Johannesburg: Graeme Smith has made a return to South Africa's Test and ODI teams for the upcoming series against Pakistan in the UAE, after four months on the sidelines following surgery on his left ankle. Smith, 32, will lead South Africa in the two Test matches to be played in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in October.
Also making a return to the ODI team after missing South Africa's recent tour of Sri Lanka was pace-bowling spearhead Dale Steyn as were Imran Tahir, Wayne Parnell and Vernon Philander. Jacques Kallis was named in the ODI squad; he last played 50-over cricket in early 2012. There has been no change in the Test squad.
"Both Imran and Wayne had good tours to Sri Lanka in the T20 series while we want to give Vernon the chance to show us what he can do. He and Wayne are both good lower-order all-rounders and have the ability to contribute significantly in the batting department as well," said chief of selectors Andrew Hudson. "We have retained the 15-man Test squad that has served us so well over the past couple of years. They have impressed not just with the results but with the depth in the squad and a notable feature has been the manner in which players have put up their hands when we have had the inevitable injuries."
Smith has been in recovery since May and had two pins inserted in his left ankle to repair a stress factor. He last played international cricket in March at home against South Africa. Following that series, Smith turned out for county side Surrey for three first-class and one 40-over match in May before he was ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy.
The tour starts on October 14 with the first Test at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium followed by the second Test in Dubai from October 23. These are followed by five ODIS and three Twenty20 internationals. South Africa will name their Twenty20 squad at the completion of this month's Champions League T20, said Hudson.
