    India name provisional squad for U-19 WC

    Dubai: The ICC has confirmed that the BCCI has named nine players with first-class experience in its provisional 30-man squad for the Under-19 World Cup to be held in Queensland in August. They are Unmukt Chand, Manan Vohra, Akhil Herwadkar, Kumar Deobrat, Aparajith Baba, Sandeep Sharma, Ravi Singh, Vikas Mishra and Chirag Khurana.Chand, 19, is the most high-profile member of the squad having captained India at the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia – where he scored a century in the final to seal victory – as well as being a part of the Delhi Daredevils’ squad in the recent IPL season. He has played 11 first-class matches for Delhi and averages 43.41. Chand’s Delhi team-mate Mishra, a left-arm spinner, is the most experienced player in the U-19 squad having played 15 first-class matches in which he has taken 55 wickets. Vohra has opened with Chand for India at the U-19 level and has played two first-class matches for his state Punjab. Herwadkar, 17-year-old batsman, made his debut as an opener for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in November. Maharashtra’s Chirag Khurana has played five first-class matches, in which time he has scored two centuries. Deobrat (two matches for Jharkhand), Aparajith Baba (four matches for Tamil Nadu) and Sandeep Sharma (three matches for Punjab) have all played Ranji Trophy cricket too. As per the ICC rules, teams must name their final 15-man squads for the World Cup by July 11. The ninth edition of the U-19 World Cup will take place in Queensland from August 11-26 with Australia defending the title it won after defeating Pakistan in the final of the previous event in New Zealand two years ago.
