Toss won by India (decided to bat)

India beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 53 runs

Man of the Match: Ravindra Jadeja

Highlights

17:10(IST)

Jadeja again going close to the bat but Pushpakumara stays and survives, that's the end of the day's proceedings. Sri Lanka started the day badly, collapsing and being all out in the first session. But they have shown some great fight after being forced to follow on, Mendis and Karunaratne sharing a 180-run partnerhsip for the second wicket and keeping the Indian spinners at bay. Mendis's late dismissal will give Kohli an co. hope though, given how brittle the Sri Lankan batting line-up is. Do join us tomorrow morning for live action!

17:00(IST)

Kohli straight away going back to Ashwin after getting that wicket, just 3 overs left in the day and you can expect Ashwin to bowl two of those. Pandya is off the attack after getting the wicket.

16:52(IST)

WICKET! Pandya might well have gotten the break through with a slower ball, Saha takes a brilliant catch behind the stumps. Slower ball takes the inside edge and hits the pads, before just lobbing up. Saha takes a brilliant catch behind the stumps. Mendis has to walk back after a brilliant knock off 110.

16:46(IST)

Mohammed Shami has replaced Ashwin as we approach the end of the day, India going for all pace attack now, or maybe Kohli is looking to change ends for Ashwin. Will be intresting to see how it goes..

16:41(IST)

Pandya is not being able to maintain a consistent line and length for now, also bowling the occasional no-ball. Virat Kohli won't be happy with this, will be intresting to see how long he continues with him.

16:32(IST)

Hardik Pandya has the ball for India now, Virat Kohli giving the likes of Ashwin and Jadeja time to rest a bit. Can Pandya be the bowler to provide the tourists with that elusive break through?

16:21(IST)

Kusal Mendis becomes the 1st player to score a century against India while following on since 2012. The last player to do so was England’s Alastair Cook who score 176 in Ahmedabad in 2012.

16:18(IST)

100: Kusal Mendis has completely negated the bite of the Indian bowlers and has slammed his third century in the longest format of the game. What a brilliant innings under pressure by the Lankan star.

16:05(IST)

Since tea, India have bowled 16 overs so far and the Lankans have score 60 runs without losing a single wicket. The hosts will be very happy with their exploits.

16:04(IST)

Four: Mendis has played the sweep shot so well today and once again he goes down on one knee and sweeps the ball towards the mid wicket boundary for a four. With that he reaches 94 in the innings. The partnership between these two is worth 160.

15:53(IST)

The Indian bowlers have been very unlucky in the second innings as well. While in the first, everything took the edge out the bat of Sri Lankan batsmen. However, in this innings everything seem to miss the outside edge of the bat. Or on few occasions, the stumps as well.

15:45(IST)

Apart from hitting boundaries what these two have done well is the fact that they have taken singles more often than not. The right hand left hand combination is working well and isn't giving time to the bowlers to settle.

15:36(IST)

150: Sri Lanka cross the 150 run mark with Mendis and Karunaratne going along nicely. Ashwin (5 wickets in first innings) and Jadeja (2 wickets in first innings) have gone for runs in this innings while they haven't picked up even a single wicket so far.

15:32(IST)

Four: Over pitched from Jadeja this time and Mendis comes onto the front foot and drives the ball past the cover fielder for a boundary. 14th boundary of the innings for Mendis.

15:24(IST)

At the moment, the India bowlers are looking short on ideas as they are just not able to breach the armour of these two batsmen. Be it the pacers or the spinners, Karunaratne and Mendis have rendered them effectless so far in the innings.

15:23(IST)

Four: Mendis is growing in confidence with every passing delivery and once again he hits a four off the bowling of R Ashwin. The right hander this time reverse sweeps the ball for a boundary.

15:18(IST)

Change of balls as the ball which was being used in the innings for the past 32 overs had deteriorated. The seam was starting to come off and that is why the umpires have decided to chance the ball with a hard seam ball.

15:11(IST)

Four: Umesh Yadav starts the proceedings after tea and is hit for a four on the last ball of the over. Umesh was bowling from around the wicket and Karunaratne simply flicks the ball for a boundary towards the square leg region.

14:44(IST)

Tea: Half centuries from Karunaratne (61*) and Mendis (55*) have powered Sri Lanka to 118/1. Umesh Yadav with the only wicket of the innings.

14:42(IST)

This session completely belongs to the hosts as they have scored runs at the brisk pace and they have lost just one wicket. Sri Lanka will be happy with the exploits of Karunaratne and Mendis.

14:35(IST)

The India bowlers will have to be patient as this is what Test cricket is all about. If they manage to break this partnership the pressure will be back on the hosts.

14:32(IST)

Four: Short and wide from Umesh and Mendis latches onto it hard and bludgeons the ball hard on the off side for a boundary. The ball races away for a four past the cover fielder for his 12th four of the innings.

14:27(IST)

50: Dimuth Karunaratne also notches up his half century as well. Both he and Mendis are taking the attack to the Indian bowlers and are batting well out there. This is Karunaratne's fifth Test fifty.

14:25(IST)

With this half century, Kusal Mendis has added another half century in his lift of fifties in the second innings. This is Kusal Mendis’ 5th 50+ score in the 2nd innings, he managed just 2 50+ scores in the 1st innings

14:20(IST)

50: Kusal Mendis and Dimuth Karunaratne are taking the attack to the Indian bowlers and that brings up the 100 run for Sri Lanka. Mendis also notches up his half century. Out of his 53 runs, Mendis has hit 44 runs in boundaries.

14:16(IST)

Mendis is batting beautifully out there as he is now batting on 49 off just 50 deliveries. He has used the sweep shot to great affect againt Ashwin and that is why he has been so successful in this innings.

14:07(IST)

Both Karunaratne and Mendis are now batting in their 40s and the putting the pressure on the hosts with some glorious hitting. India need to break this partnership soon.

14:06(IST)

Four, Four, Four and Four: Kusal Mendis is starting to take the attack to Jadeja as he hits four boundaries in his over. The first two boundary he hit towards the point region where he went back into the crease and cut the ball. Jadeja then bowled on his legs and Mendis swept the ball for a boundary towards mid wicket. Jadeja then changed the length of the ball and dropped his short and Mendis flicked the ball for a boundary towards square leg.

13:58(IST)

DRS overturns decision: Ravindra Jadeja thought he had his first breakthrough of the innings when the on field umpire gave Mendis caught behind. But he straightaway opted for the DRS and replays showed that the ball had touched his pads and not bat. The right hander survives.

13:53(IST)

Four: Short ball from Ashwin and Mendis had all the time to hit it for a boundary. The right hander just waited for the balll to come to him and then pulled it for a four towards the mid wicket region.

13:51(IST)

Partnership: 50 partnership up between these two. Virat Kohli will be frustrated for the first time in this Test as Karunaratne and Mendis are putting a good stand together. The duo have looked nervy on occasions but have looked positive throughout the innings so far.

Day 2 Round Up:

India have now taken a vice-like grip on the second Test as Sri Lanka trail the visitors by 572 runs and they have already lost two wickets in their first innings at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo on Friday.

After India decided to declare at the team score of 622/9, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin struck twice to pull the match firmly in India's corner.

In just the second over of the Sri Lankan innings, Upul Thranga hit an Ashwin delivery straight at KL Rahul — who was fielding at short leg — and somehow the ball stuck in his body and he was able to get hold of it. Skipper Kohli celebrated the first scalp of the innings by doing the 'dab' with Rahul.

Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis tried to steady the innings but putting on a 33-run stand for the second wicket. But even this partnership didn't last long as Karunaratne became Ashwin's second scalp of the day.

The off-spinner found the outside edge of the southpaw's bat and Ajinkya Rahane took an easy catch in the slip. Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis then joined forced in the middle to end the day without suffering anymore hiccups.
