Haryana: Woman crushed to death for filing RTI

Fatehabad: A village Sarpanch in Fatehabad in Haryana allegedly crushed a woman to death by mowing her down with his vehicle. He did this because her father-in-law had dared to file a Right to Information application exposing a pension fraud.

The victim, Sonu, died and her father-in-law who tried to save her was critically injured. This was not the first time the Sarpanch had allegedly attacked them.

Locals say that he had assaulted Sonu with an iron rod for filing the application. The Sarpanch has been arrested along with three others in the case.

Fatehabad SHO Subhash Chandra said that there were discrepancies in the disbursement of pension.

Mahavir had filed the RTI to help his friends who were eligible for pension, but did not receive it. After the RTI was filed, it came to light that money was being withdrawn from the government, but was not being given as pension to the eligible people.

The matter then started to be probed, following which the Sarpanch started threatening Jagdish and his family.

Talking to CNN-IBN, Fatehabad SP Vivek Sharma said that there was an exchange of words between the two sides on February 10 and the Sarpanch, who was surrounded by his men ran his vehicle over Sonu. He also said that the vehicle used in the offense has also been recovered.

"There were complaints from Sonu's family earlier also and we are investigating into the matter," he said.
