New Delhi: CPI General Secretary AB Bardhan has admitted that the Assembly election results are a warning sign for the leadership to change or perish.
Speaking to CNN-IBN's Karan Thapar, Bardhan said that there was nothing wrong with the Left's ideology, but the tactics adopted for dealing with different situations need to be in sync with ground realities. He said that leaders who are not able to adapt to change will have no option but to go.
AB Bardhan: As far as our ideology is concerned, it has always been correct, I don't think it's anything to do with ideology. But in working out tactics which are suitable to locations, which are in sync with the actual situation, it is the capacity of leadership, it is where we are tested, we should try to do that.
Karan Thapar: But you said that leadership needs to devise the right tactics to work with the people. That suggests that the leadership was incapable of doing that up till now?
AB Bardhan: The leadership thought that it can substitute people in all respects, that is not correct.
Karan Thapar: You know what all of this suggests to me - that you need a new leadership at the top that can do thinking in terms of tactics, in terms of responding to the people, in terms of responding to the situation.
AB Bardhan: A new leadership does not mean new leadership always, even the old people have to acclimatise themselves to the demands of new situations.
Karan Thapar: You know, all over the world it's very difficult for people to continue in a position and yet change their thinking - it's always easier for a new person to come with new thinking?
AB Bardhan: I agree but those who can't will be out, no doubt about it. It applies to me, it applies to everyone.
Karan Thapar: In other words there is a bell tolling for the top leadership, you either change or you are out?
AB Bardhan: You must understand the whole situation or you may be one of those for whom the bell tolls.
