Yusuf Pathan had bowled just 1 over in the first three games of the 10th edition of this year’s tournament and gave away 15 runs off one over against Gujarat Lions. But even then, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir turned to Yusuf with SRH openers David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan going well. And Yusuf answered the skipper’s call with Dhawan’s wicket and that changed the complexion of the match.
Chasing 173 for a win was not a difficult task as per the pundits and both Dhawan and Warner started well as they raced to 45/0 in the sixth over. The batsmen were playing the regular Kolkata bowlers with utmost ease and Gambhir suddenly turned to Yusuf.
It was a killer move by Gambhir as Yusuf struck off the fourth ball of the 7th over to send back an in-form looking Shikhar Dhawan for 23. From a position of strength at 46/0 after 6.3 overs, SRH needed to re-build again. And that never happened as none of the other batsmen managed to build a partnership.
The next best partnership of 31 came for Deepak Hooda and Yuvraj Singh between the 11th and 14th over and by then, KKR had already tightened the screws on Hyderabad.
Interestingly, that was the only over Yusuf bowled as Gambhir then turned back to regular spinners Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav. Yusuf ended with figures of 1/2 off 1 over.
