Malik, Pollard script Barbados win to open CPL

Half-centuries from former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard enabled Barbados Tridents to beat St. Lucia Zouks by 18 runs on the opening day of the 2013 Caribbean Premier League.

Playing at home, Barbados decided to bat, but the decision backfired as the hosts found themselves reeling at 48 for 5. Malik (78*) and Pollard (61*) then rescued the innings with heroic knocks on their way to posting a challenging 169 for 5.

St. Lucia bowled well initially to pack up the Barbados top order, which included names like Shakib-Al-Hasan and Umar Akmal, but then failed to stand up to the aggression showed by Malik and Pollard.

The visitors began their chase well with an opening stand of 57 between Andrew Fletcher and Tamim Iqbal, but Fletcher was soon reduced to a lone warrior after Tamim was dismissed by Ashley Nurse.

It was a procession thereafter with wickets falling at regular intervals. St. Lucia skipper Darren Sammy was the only other batsman to show some resistance with 35 off 16 balls, but it was all too late in the day to stage a comeback.
