Shirakawa (Japan): The killer 8.9 magnitude earthquake which also triggered a massive tsunami on Friday flattened Japan's north eastern region. The devastation has been unprecedented and over 100 people are feared dead. Over 10,000 have been displaced.
Rail, road and air services have all been disrupted. An oil refinery continues to burn in Chiba while a dam has been washed away as a result along with thousands of homes.
A series of 155 aftershocks have rocked Japan including one quake measuring 7.1 on the Ritcher scale. The quake also triggered giant tsunami waves all the way to Hawaii and the US west coast. The first tsunami waves have also reached northern Chile but no damage has been reported.
