Cardiff: New Zealand held on for a dramatic one-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in their Group A match at the Champions Trophy on Sunday. The Kiwis finished on 139 for 9 with 13½ overs to spare after dismissing Sri Lanka for 138 in 37.5 overs.Despite the low run chase, New Zealand collapsed to 49 for 4 and then 80 for 6. Brothers Brendan and Nathan McCullum moved their team to 115 before Brendan McCullum (18) was bowled by Lasith Malinga, who finished with 4 for 34.Malinga also trapped Nathan McCullum lbw for 32 and Kyle Mills was bizarrely run out after Thisara Perera aimed at one end and hit the stumps at the other to make it 134 for 9.Tim Southee (13 not out) and Mitchell McClenaghan (1 not out) clinched victory for New Zealand with a suitably chaotic end. McClenaghan dived to make his ground for a second run and Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara fumbled as he broke the stumps, but an eventual wide signal made the run-out attempt immaterial.Earlier, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and opted to bat on a dry wicket. Sangakkara scored the highest individual innings of the day, hitting 68 off 87 balls before being caught by Kane Williamson off Nathan McCullum.McClenaghan took 4 for 43 off 8.5 overs while Daniel Vettori, making his first ODI appearance in more than two years, finished with 1 for 16 off six overs.
