    New Zealand vs England, 1st Test, Day 1: as it happened

    Rain and persistent bad weather didn't allow any play on Wednesday at Dunedin after the hosts opted to field.

    Rain Update: Well the news is that it will take couple of hours to mop the field dry once it stops raining. So cricket not happening anytime soon at the University Oval.

    The morning conditions at Dunedin was muggy and the umpires decided to delay the start until the light got better. But to add more trouble it started raining.

    It has been learnt that Graeme Swann, left out of this game due to injury has been ruled out of the entire series and will fly to America for elbow surgery. James Tredwell will replace him.

    Toss: New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and chose to bowl against England on the opening day of first Test.

    Team news: New Zealand have named two players to make their Test debuts; opening batsman Hamish Rutherford and left-arm spinner Bruce Martin. While for England, Graeme Swann has been ruled out with an elbow injury.
