PREVIEW NZ vs ENG: New Zealand called up former Hong Kong representative Mark Chapman on Thursday to strengthen their Twenty20 batting in the wake of last week's tri-series drubbing by Australia. Chapman and wicketkeeper Tom Siefert were included in the Black Caps' 13-man squad at the expense of Tom Bruce and Tom Blundell. It comes after the New Zealanders slumped to a seven-wicket loss in their opening tri-series match against Australia in Sydney. Chapman, 23, has played two ODIs and 19 T20s for Hong Kong but is eligible to play for New Zealand through his Kiwi father. He has been in fine form for Auckland in the domestic T20 competition, averaging 34.11 at a strike-rate of 171.50, including 117 off 104 balls against Wellington last Sunday. Siefert, also 23, has averaged 32.30 at 146.81. New Zealand play their tri-series match against England in Wellington on Tuesday, when they will seek to bounce back from three straight losses in the ultra-short form of the game.

Commentary (England innings)

Jos Buttler, the losing skipper laments that they leaked 10-15 runs too many with the ball. Admits to his bowlers being largely awry yet dragging it back towards the end. Says that when Alex Hales looks good like he did at the start, the fielders don't matter and at that stage they looked to go good. About hoping for Australia to beat New Zealand for England to qualify, he states that they won't WISH for anything and just LET the things take their own course.

The Player of the Match award is given to Kane Williamson. The New Zealand captain says that it feels good to do well against an English side that has been a force to reckon with in limited overs cricket of late. Admits to having no great clue about the ideal score on this wicket and the start provided by his batters augured well for them. About his own form, he reckons that he was a knock away from getting back among the runs and he always looked to give it his all. Iterates that the conditions were tough for fielding yet his side did well to come out on the right side of the result.

Alex Hales began well in the pursuit of the tall target. He was timing the ball crisply and bashing it brilliantly till the time he was sent back. David Malan was the only other English batter who looked like posing a fight. The duo's association of 65 runs gave their side a realistic chance of gunning the score down. But then, the others failed to turn up and that turned out to be their undoing. Not sure if this is yet another batting failure for them or a bowling failure this time. For the Kiwis, Mitchell Santner was the pick of the bowler, varying his flight and pace, in course of picking up a couple of wickets. They never let the tourists off the hook in the run chase. Let's wait to hear what the presentation has for us.

Pretty one-way traffic in the end. England have been steamrolled yet again in this tri-series. In the previous games, the talks revolved around their bowling not getting a chance to come good due to their batting failures. But here, when they did bowl first, they failed to exhibit much control, so much so that they ended up conceding a mountain full of runs. That proved a bit too much in the end for their batters, who yet again fell short.

19.6 T Boult to A Rashid, FOUR! Speared in on the pads, Rashid just tickles it fine down the leg side and the ball races away to the fence. Counts for nothing more than reducing the DEFEAT MARGIN TO 12 RUNS! First win for New Zealand in the series. 184/9

19.5 T Boult to M Wood, Squeezed out through point for a single. 180/9

19.4 T Boult to M Wood, Full and outside off, Mark misses it. 179/9

19.3 T Boult to M Wood, FOUR! Streaky but that's what you get with tailenders in. Length ball angling away, Wood gives it his all but gets a thick outside edge past the keeper and into the third man fence. 179/9

19.2 T Boult to A Rashid, Outside off, cut away through point for one. 175/9

19.1 T Boult to A Rashid, The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. The batsmen have picked up a couple of runs. 174/9

Mark Wood is the next man in. Boult is on a hat-trick and Rashid will face it.

18.6 Tim Southee to A Rashid, CURTAINS FOR WILLEY! Yorker on the stumps, Rashid digs it out. The ball rolls towards the keeper, who takes down the stumps at his end with a dive as Willey tries to get in with a dive of his own. Both the Tims seem pretty confident as the umpire takes it upstairs. First look by the TV umpire confirms the first line. 172/9

Another run out appeal taken upstairs. Seifert does well to fire a throw at the striker's end. Willey tries to get in with a dive. The end decision is to be made by the TV umpire.

18.5 Tim Southee to D Willey, This is around off, David charges down and takes it on the full towards mid off. Just one possible. 172/8

18.4 Tim Southee to D Willey, Very full on the stumps, a low full toss in fact. Hit back towards the bowler, whose leg stops the ball from going past him. 171/8

18.3 Tim Southee to A Rashid, This is hit down to long on for a single. 26 off 9 needed. 171/8

18.2 Tim Southee to A Rashid, Another yorker outside off, dug out well by Rashid for nothing. 170/8

18.2 Tim Southee to A Rashid, WIDE! Full and spearing down the leg side. Adil misses the flick. 170/8

18.1 Tim Southee to D Willey, Yorker outside off, Willey squeezes it out through point on the off side for one. 169/8

Adil Rashid is the second last batter for the English. Since that was the end of the over, he won't be facing the hat-trick ball as of now.

17.6 T Boult to L Plunkett, OUT! Boult is breathing fire. Two in two for him. Spears in another full and straight delivery in line of the stumps, Plunkett charges down the track in a bid to go big. Misses the ball completely to see a mess made of his stumps. The end is nigh for the visiting team. Numerically, 29 off 12 needed, with two wickets in hand. 168/8

Liam Plunkett walks in at 9.

17.5 T Boult to C Jordan, OUT! You miss, I hit! Boult spears this full aiming at the off stick. Jordan looks to go downtown but misses the ball. The ball doesn't miss the off stick. Boult is all charged up. 168/7

17.4 T Boult to C Jordan, FOUR! Swat! Banged short around middle and leg, Jordan hangs back and flat-bats it through square leg for a quadruple. 168/6

17.3 T Boult to D Willey, Full and well outside off, would have been a wide if he would have let it be. Gets it off the toe end through covers for one. 164/6

17.2 T Boult to C Jordan, Gets it off the inner edge towards fine leg for one. 163/6

17.1 T Boult to C Jordan, Fuller in length, Jordan misses the flick. The ball goes past the leg stick and Seifert behind fails to collect that. Two byes. 162/6

Trent Boult is back on. 37 off 18 needed.

16.6 M Santner to C Jordan, Another skier goes down! Jordan launches it high into the night sky, there's enough time for Southee to settle under it and pouch it at the deep mid-wicket fence. Yet he fails to hang onto that and offers Chris a reprieve. A run taken. 160/6

16.5 M Santner to C Jordan, Tossed up on the stumps, Jordan can only manage to push it back to the bowler. 159/6

16.4 M Santner to D Willey, Fired outside off, driven through covers for one. 159/6

Chris Jordan is the next man in.

16.3 M Santner to D Malan, OUT! Easy peesy! Floated up on the stumps, Malan looks to help himself to another maximum but picks out Boult at long on to perfection. End of another good but futile knock from him. His side is still 39 runs away from the target. 158/6

16.2 M Santner to D Malan, SIX! Kabooom! Malan gets to the pitch of the ball and blasts it over the deep mid-wicket fence for half a dozen. 158/5

16.2 M Santner to D Malan, WIDE! The ball is too wide on the off side for the batsman to make any contact. The umpire has signalled a wide. 152/5

16.1 M Santner to D Malan, Fired on the pads, Malan gets it off the inner half towards fine leg for a couple. 151/5

15.6 Ish Sodhi to D Willey, DROPPED and SIX! Santner the criminal! Googly outside off, not sure Willey picked that up. Slogs it towards wide long on where Santner is stationed. He times his jump to perfection yet fails to latch onto that. The ball ricochets off his hands and goes over the fence. Costly miss? 149/5

15.5 Ish Sodhi to D Willey, It's been driven superbly through the covers. Two runs added to the total. 143/5

15.4 Ish Sodhi to D Willey, SAFE! Willey pushes it towards mid off and sets off for a single. Williamson fires a direct hit at the bowler's end. The ball deflects towards long on and another one is taken. The TV umpire is referred to and he confirms in the first look that the batter is safe. 141/5

Direct hit at the bowler's end. Referred upstairs just to be safe. David Willey is the man in question.

15.3 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, The batsman picked it early and slog swept it through the leg side. The batsmen have run through for a single. 139/5

15.2 Ish Sodhi to D Willey, Punched through covers for one. 138/5

15.1 Ish Sodhi to D Willey, SIX! Willey, you beauty! Gets a nice tossed up delivery which he banishes it over the mid-wicket fence for half a dozen. 137/5

Ish Sodhi is back on.

14.6 M Santner to D Malan, 3rd T20I fifty for Malan. Smashes it down the ground for a brace to get to the mark. 6 runs and a wicket off this one. 131/5

David Willey makes his way out to the center.

14.5 M Santner to Sam Billings, OUT! Four flushed! That's what spin bowling is all about. At a time when batters would be expected to come at you, as a spinner, one would expect you to dart the deliveries quicker. But Santner is brave to flight it up generously. The line is outside off, forcing Billings to reach for it in order to sweep it. Sam does just that and gets a top edge towards short fine leg. Sodhi runs to his right and takes it with a dive forward. 68 off 31 needed for England. 129/5

14.4 M Santner to Sam Billings, Santner sees Billings come down the track and fires this flatter. Sam adjusts his shot and slaps it through covers for a brace. 129/4

14.3 M Santner to D Malan, Short in length, Malan looks to power it through mid-wicket but only manages to get it off the bottom half for one. 127/4

14.2 M Santner to Sam Billings, Knocked down to long on for a single. 126/4

14.1 M Santner to Sam Billings, Brave. Tossed up delivery around off, Billings blocks it from the crease. 125/4

Mitchell Santner to roll his arm.

13.6 Tim Southee to Sam Billings, Back of a length ball on the stumps, Sam goes back to steer it to third man. Manages an inside edge onto the pads to the off side for one. 125/4

13.5 Tim Southee to Sam Billings, FOUR! Shot! You can have as many men as you want in the deep, yet I will find the gap, says Billings. This is short in length, Billings nails the pull through backward square leg. Finds the gap to bring down the required runs to 73 off 37 balls. 124/4

Another man goes deep in the leg side.

13.4 Tim Southee to Sam Billings, Play and miss. Full and well outside off, Sam gets across and looks to SWEEP this away. All he manages is a faint tickle onto his pads and through to the keeper. 120/4

13.3 Tim Southee to Sam Billings, Good running. Billings glides this length ball towards third man and takes a couple. 120/4

13.2 Tim Southee to D Malan, Now he charges down the track and pushes it through covers for one. 118/4

13.1 Tim Southee to D Malan, Length ball outside off, Malan looks to pull it away but misses. 117/4

Tim Southee is back.

12.6 de Grandhomme to D Malan, On the pads, nudged down to fine leg for one. 117/4

12.5 de Grandhomme to D Malan, FOUR! Lovely. Full and slanting away, Malan has enough room to drive it through the cover region for a boundary. 116/4

12.4 de Grandhomme to Sam Billings, That ball has taken the inside edge of the batsman and thudded into his pads. They pick up a single. 112/4

12.3 de Grandhomme to Sam Billings, On the pads, Sam misses the flick. The ball hits him on the pads and an appeal is drawn. No says the umpire. 111/4

12.2 de Grandhomme to D Malan, The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads. One run added to the total. 111/4

12.1 de Grandhomme to Sam Billings, Angling in on the pads, flicked away through square leg for one. 110/4

Sam Billings comes in next, with his side needing 88 more off 8 overs.

11.6 Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler, Goes the distance? NO! Jos Buttler is OUT of here! Nicely tossed up around off and middle, he charges down the track, gets to the pitch and belts it over mid off. Seems to have made a decent contact and we were admiring the not-yet-confirmed biggie. But lo! The ball fails to clear the ropes, enabling Southee to pouch that with ease. Mind you, this wasn't an easy catch. Perhaps the wind made the ball stay in rather than going over. The reason being, Southee first took a couple of steps back, anticipating the ball to either clear him or catch it at the end of the ropes but then had to come in a couple of steps and take that. Brilliant take. 109/4

11.5 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, The batsman rocks onto the back foot and punches the ball. They pick up a single. 109/3

11.4 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, FOUR! Innovation at its best. Malan anticipates that he won't have a floated delivery after the previous ball. Gets a flatter one on a shorter length outside off, he gets down and reverse sweeps it over backward point for another boundary. 108/3

11.3 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, SIX! BOOM! Bashed with disdain. Floated on middle, Malan gets down and slog sweeps it over deep mid-wicket for a mighty hit. 104/3

11.2 Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler, Lofted down to long off for a single. 98/3

11.1 Ish Sodhi to Jos Buttler, Flatter on the pads, flicked round the corner for nothing. 97/3

Ish Sodhi is back on.

10.6 de Grandhomme to Jos Buttler, Jos gets off the mark with a cover drive. 97/3

10.5 de Grandhomme to D Malan, Outside off, pushed through point for one. 96/3

Jos Buttler walks in next. Needs more than a skipper's knock here.

10.4 de Grandhomme to J Vince, OUT! Direct hits more often than not prove fatal and this one too, does the same. Vince's first outing in Australia ended in a run out and so does his first in New Zealand. He pushes this towards mid off and looks to pinch a run. Is a touch lazy in making it in. Williamson from extra cover cuts it off and nails down the stumps at the bowler's end. It is taken upstairs but that's just the formality. The replay finds James well short and that's that. The visitors are still 102 away. 95/3

Gone? Should be! James Vince and run out. Familiar words? Direct hit at the bowler's end is referred upstairs. The first four-letter word in this insert should stand true...

10.3 de Grandhomme to D Malan, Played to the point region by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single. 95/2

10.2 de Grandhomme to D Malan, DROPPED and FOUR! The first description is a harsh one but that's the truth. Malan lofts it over covers and thinks it to be a safe boundary. But Santner rushes to his right from long off. He flings himself with his arms outstretched and just manages to get a hand to it. That's all he can manage as the ball slips in to the fence post that. Would have been a screamer. 94/2

10.1 de Grandhomme to D Malan, The batsman has been hit on the glove or forearm. 90/2

Colin de Grandhomme is brought into the attack.

9.6 C Munro to D Malan, Length ball outside off, Malan looks to force it through the off side. Gets it past the off stump from an inside edge towards short fine leg for one. 90/2

9.5 C Munro to D Malan, Similar shot, Malan misses it yet again. Gets rapped on the front pad, that draws an LBW appeal. Turned down. Height could be a factor. 89/2

9.4 C Munro to D Malan, OUCH! Malan gets down to sweep this but misses. The ball strikes him on the helmet grill and the rear protective gear falls off. No harm caused. 89/2

9.3 C Munro to J Vince, This one is pulled through square leg for one. 89/2

9.2 C Munro to J Vince, SIX! Sweet! Fuller in length outside off, perhaps the knuckle ball. Vince picks it up early and just chips it up over wide mid on. The timing is such that the ball sails over the fence. 88/2

9.1 C Munro to J Vince, Full outside off, Vince misses his sweep. 82/2

8.6 Ish Sodhi to J Vince, Quick, short and flat, pulled through square leg. One run to end the over. 82/2

8.5 Ish Sodhi to J Vince, Flighted delivery outside off, driven through the covers for a double. 81/2

8.4 Ish Sodhi to J Vince, Fuller on the stumps, pushed back to the bowler. 79/2

James Vince walks out next.

8.3 Ish Sodhi to A Hales, OUT! ALEX HALES IS GONE! This is a huge wicket for New Zealand. Hales was looking good out there and he's walking back rather cheaply. His expression describes it all, disgusted with himself. Half tracker on middle, Hales pulls it straight to Colin de Grandhomme at deep mid-wicket. Simplest of catches for him, sends Alex back just short of a fifty. 79/2

8.2 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, Floated on the stumps and it's swept through backward square leg for one run. 79/1

8.1 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, FOUR! Premeditated shot and it's paid dividends. Dawid Malan kneels down to play the reverse sweep and places it in the gap between backward point and short third man. Boundary! 78/1

7.6 C Munro to D Malan, This is what Williamson wanted. A tight over and he's got that. Just 3 off it. It's tucked to fine leg for a run. 74/1

7.5 C Munro to D Malan, Malan has missed out. He knows that. Juicy full toss outside off, Malan makes room and smacks this hard, only to find the man at extra cover. Either side of the fielder and that was away. 73/1

7.4 C Munro to A Hales, Fraction straight in line, it's worked through mid-wicket for a single. 73/1

7.3 C Munro to A Hales, Slower in pace, Hales picks it up and hits it to the covers. But straight to the fielder again. 72/1

7.2 C Munro to A Hales, Touch short outside off, pushed to extra cover. No run taken. 72/1

7.1 C Munro to D Malan, Length ball angling in from around the wicket, it's worked square on the leg side for a single. 72/1

Colin Munro is brought into the attack.

6.6 Ish Sodhi to A Hales, SIX! BOOM! Tossed up, Hales gets low to this and slog sweeps it over mid-wicket for a maximum. That went a long way. Deep, deep into the stands. 71/1

6.5 Ish Sodhi to A Hales, Spinning away from around off, Hales plays and misses. 65/1

6.4 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, Where is the slip, Kane Williamson? That would have been out had there been one. Easy. Tossed up, Malan closes the face a bit too early and gets an edge which goes through the vacant slip cordon. Single taken. 65/1

6.3 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, FOUR! Short ball outside off, Malan stays deep inside his crease and slaps it through the covers for a boundary. The 50-partnership is up too. 64/1

6.2 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, Wrong 'un from Sodhi and it's turned a long way. Landed short around off, Malan doesn't pick it up as he reaches out to make connection. 60/1

6.1 Ish Sodhi to D Malan, Tossed up leg break around off, Malan is well forward in defense. 60/1

Ish Sodhi is brought into the attack. His spell will be crucial in how this innings shapes out.

5.6 Tim Southee to D Malan, Streaky but England will take it. Slower one, takes the inside edge of Dawid Malan's bat and goes towards fine leg. Boult chases it down and keeps the batsmen to three run. 60/1 at the end of the Powerplay for England, this is a good start for them. 60/1

5.5 Tim Southee to D Malan, FOUR! Finally makes some sweet connection! Southee continues with the short stuff and Malan powers it with a pull over mid-wicket, beating the man in the deep. 57/1

5.4 Tim Southee to A Hales, Takes some of the pace off this as it's landed on a length on middle and leg, Hales works it behind square leg for a single. 53/1

5.3 Tim Southee to D Malan, Short again, pulled over mid-wicket for just a single. 52/1

5.2 Tim Southee to D Malan, Another mistimed pull from Malan, on the bounce towards mid on. The surface is a bit sticky from the looks of things, which is making it difficult for the southpaw to connect cleanly. 51/1

5.1 Tim Southee to D Malan, Just behind a length, quite close to off, Malan mistimes his pull towards mid on. 51/1

Tim Southee returns.

4.6 T Boult to A Hales, FOUR! Hasn't exactly middled it, but it's runs all the same. 20 off the over as Alex Hales slices it over backward point for a boundary. 51/1

4.5 T Boult to A Hales, SIX! BANG! Hales taking the attack to Boult here. Back of a length and it's pulled with aplomb over mid-wicket for a flat biggie. Went like a rocket, that. 47/1

4.4 T Boult to A Hales, FOUR! That is an excellent shot. Clever stuff from Alex Hales. Picked his spot and executed his spot to perfection. Quite full on off, Hales gets low and squeezes it between point and backward point to send it all the way for a boundary. 41/1

4.3 T Boult to A Hales, Length ball hurled outside off, Hales looks to muscle this, pulls it down the ground but straight to Southee on the bounce. 37/1

4.2 T Boult to A Hales, Full ball well outside off, Hales drives but straight to the cover fielder. 37/1

4.1 T Boult to A Hales, SIX! And Trent Boult is taken for a ride! Big, big hit from Alex Hales. Short ball into the body, Alex swivels a touch and pulls it with a lot of power over square leg. Gets a lot of height and enough distance on it to clear the fence for a maximum. 37/1

Trent Boult is back on.

3.6 M Santner to D Malan, Shout for a leg before! But nothing from the umpire. Maybe a slight inside edge? Pitching outside leg maybe? Full on the stumps, Malan kneels and misses the sweep. 31/1

3.5 M Santner to A Hales, Sliding in on middle and leg, quite fast in pace. Catches Hales on the pads who misses his flick and goes away through the vacant slip cordon. Leg bye taken. 31/1

3.4 M Santner to A Hales, Quicker again, on a bit of a shorter length, Hales punches it firmly down the ground from the back foot and takes two. 30/1

3.3 M Santner to A Hales, Flatter and straighter on middle and off, Hales goes deep inside the crease and whips it through backward square leg for one. 28/1

3.2 M Santner to A Hales, Pushed quicker through the air again, on the stumps, Hales stays back and quietly keeps it out. 24/1

3.1 M Santner to D Malan, Flatter and straighter on middle and off, Malan goes deep inside the crease and whips it through backward square leg for one. 24/1

2.6 Tim Southee to A Hales, FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries to end the over! Excellent timing from Alex Hales. Full ball and it's driven straight back down. Boult tries chasing it down from mid on, almost gets there but can't keep it in in time. 23/1

2.5 Tim Southee to A Hales, FOUR! Shot! Short and wide, room to work with and Alex Hales cashes in on it. Cracks it through the covers and finds the fence. 19/1

2.4 Tim Southee to D Malan, Wrists this away into the gap on the leg side for a single. 15/1

2.3 Tim Southee to D Malan, Wonderful fielding effort from Colin de Grandhomme. Malan nicely leans into cover drive and looks to pierce the gap, but the all-rounder dives quickly to his left to make the stop. 14/1

2.2 Tim Southee to D Malan, Was there an edge? Seems not, but there was some sound. Not sure of what. Short of a good length zipping off the deck outside off, Dawid Malan looks to fiercely cut this through point but is beaten. 14/1

Dawid Malan walks in at No.3.

2.1 Tim Southee to J Roy, OUT! Another failure for the usually dangerous Jason Roy! Just back of a length on off, some movement away and that probably does Roy in. Looks to clear mid on from within his crease but doesn't time it well at all. Towards Trent Boult who moves to his right and takes a simple catch. Early strike for New Zealand, exactly what they would have wanted. 14/1

Tim Southee to have a bowl now.

1.6 M Santner to A Hales, Short in length, pulled to wide mid on. 14/0

1.5 M Santner to A Hales, FOUR! Brilliant. All wrists there. Tossed up outside off, the length is a touch short. Hales hangs back and directs it through the gap between covers and point for a boundary. 14/0

1.4 M Santner to A Hales, Flatter outside off, punched off the back foot to covers. 10/0

1.3 M Santner to J Roy, Floated on the pads, Roy charges down but fails to get bat to that. The ball rolls to the on side and a leg bye is taken. 10/0

1.2 M Santner to A Hales, Almost takes the square leg umpire! Served on a shorter length, Alex gets down and sweep-pulls it through square leg for one. Off the mark. 9/0

1.1 M Santner to A Hales, Floated around off and middle, Hales stands back and presents a straight defensive bat. 8/0

Spin from the other end. Mitchell Santner has the white object in the hand. A slip in place.

0.6 T Boult to J Roy, FOUR! Consecutive boundaries to end the over! That's absolutely spanked by Jason Roy. Bit ahead of a length outside off, Roy powerfully hits this through the covers and sends it across the boundary line. 8/0

0.5 T Boult to J Roy, FOUR! Shot! Short ball into the body, Jason Roy is onto this in a flash as he rocks back and pulls it through mid-wicket for a boundary. 4/0

0.4 T Boult to J Roy, Short of a good length outside off, pushed firmly to cover but straight to the fielder. 0/0

0.3 T Boult to J Roy, This one is coming back in, on middle and off, Roy hangs back and presents a solid bat in defense. 0/0

0.2 T Boult to J Roy, Length delivery angling across from around off, Roy comes half-forward and blocks it with a straight bat. 0/0

0.1 T Boult to J Roy, Banged in short right away by Trent Boult. Takes Jason Roy by surprise as he can only tamely drop it into the off side. 0/0
