ANGUL: Affected villagers fought a pitched battle with the security personnel of Jindal Steel and Power Limited plant at its construction site at Nisha on Tuesday. The clash left 30 security personnel injured.
Some vehicles of the company were allegedly ransacked by the villagers before police took control of the situation. The JSPL is setting up its six MT steel and 1,000 MW power plants here.
According to reports, villagers of Kailakata staged a dharna in front of the plant gate seeking fulfilment of their demands, including jobs that were promised by the company during land acquisition.
On Tuesday morning, hundreds of villagers including women, stormed the plant site and pelted stones at the security staff. The staff retaliated, leading to a clash between the two groups. Villagers also allegedly resorted to arson. The situation was brought under control after SP Jyoti Mohapatra rushed four platoons of police.
Meanwhile, the villagers held a meeting where they demanded action against an officer of the Nisha police station and that of the company accusing them of flaring up of the situation.
