Will act against Kalmadi if IOA doesn't: Govt

New Delhi: Arrested in the Commonwealth Games scam, Suresh Kalmadi will appear in a Delhi court on Tuesday. With many more allegations and probes against him, a bigger setback may be in store for his career. Sports Minister Ajay Maken has asked the Indian Olympic Association to remove Kalmadi as president - saying that the government will take the legal recourse to remove Kalmadi in case the Indian Olympic Association fails to do so. After his fall from grace, suspended by the Congress party, anti-Kalmadi party workers vandalised his cabin at the Pune Congress office on Monday.“Now that the CBI has arrested Kalmadi, we request Sonia Gandhi that no corrupt man should be a member of our party,” said Prashant Surse, Vice President, Pune Youth Congress.A Member of Parliament since 1982 - Kalmadi has been the Congress' biggest force in Pune. But his fall from grace has left him isolated in the faction-ridden Pune-Congress. Kalmadi's suspension will be a boon to NCP's Ajit Pawar though - the duo has fought for dominance in Pune. “The final decision about whether or not NCP will fight civic polls with the Congress will be taken by Ajit Pawar and we will follow this decision,” said Ankush Kakde, NCP Spokesperson. The Opposition in Maharashtra insisted the probe must go beyond Kalmadi.“Suresh Kalmadi's arrest is just a tip of the iceberg. Rs 76000 crore that has been sanctioned by different departments - the Cabinet Sub Committee, Expenditure finance Committee, group of Ministers, PMO and PM, what about them,” said Nitin Gadkari, BJP president.Others believe the development will reinstate people's faith in the system.“People's faith in judiciary will be getting an impetus. This will also instill fear and will serve as a deterrent in indulging in corrupt practices. They will have the fear of going to jail,” said Anna Hazare, Activist. For the man who went from being an air force pilot to Pune's biggest political leader, no phrase rings more true than - the larger they come, the harder they fall.
