Ranji Trophy Group B, Round 7, Day 1: Haryana bundle out UP for 227

Lucknow: Mohit Sharma took five for 47 to help Haryana bundle out hosts Uttar Pradesh for a meagre 227 and then themselves reach 32 for one at the end of the opening day's play in their Ranji Trophy Group B match here on Saturday.

After putting UP in to bat, Haryana bowlers wrecked havoc as they dismissed the hosts for less than 230 runs on the board. Arish Alam top scored with 52, while Suresh Raina (49), Mukul Dagar (38) and Parvinder Singh (32) chipped in with important runs for UP. But wickets at regular interval did not help the hosts' cause at all. While Mohit ended with a five-wicket haul, Harshal Patel (2/42) claimed two wickets.

In reply to UP's modest first innings total, the visitors lost opener Abhimanyu Khod (8) early, but thereafter Rahul Dewan and Sunny Singh made sure that they do not lose any more wickets on the day. At stumps, Rahul was unbeaten on 13, while Sunny was not out on 10.

Brief scores: UP: 227 all out in 73 overs (Arish Alam 52, Suresh Raina 49; Mohit Sharma 5 for 47). Haryana: 32 for one in 9 overs (Rahul Dewan batting 13; Ankit Rajpoot 1 for 15).

    Karnataka vs Vidarbha:

In Mysore, unbeaten centuries by Lokesh Rahul and Murlidharen Gautam helped Karnataka pile up 308 for two against Vidarbha on the opening day of the their four-day Group-B Ranji Trophy match. Rahul was unbeaten on 145 and Gautam was batting on 129 at stumps.

Rahul batted cautiously and built a 44-run partnership for the first wicket with Robin Uthappa, who was first to go after scoring 24 runs from 4 balls with three boundaries.

Batting largely against a "stingless" Vidarbha attack, Rahul scored his unbeaten 145 knock from 269 balls with fifteen hits to the fence. Gautam faced 215 balls and struck eleven fours during his unconquered knock.

Sandeep Singh, who gave a push in the morning session with his two quick blows, nor Shrikant Wagh and Ravikumar Thakur could make any impact on Rahul and Gautam's 256 runs stand.

Brief scores: Karnataka (First innings) 308 for 2 in 90 overs (KL Rahul 145 not out, CM Gautham 129 not out; Sandeep Kumar 2 for 45) vs Vidharbha.

    Baroda vs Tamil Nadu

In Vadodara, tail-enders Murtuza Vahora and Bhargav Bhatt defied all the odds to put up a 63-run stand for the final wicket as Baroda reached 191 for nine at stumps against a formidable Tamil Nadu side in the Ranji Trophy group league encounter.

Bhatt joined Vahora when Baroda were 128 for nine on a seaming track where seamer V Yomahesh ripped through the middle-order grabbing five for 25. Vahora remained unbeaten on 45 while Bhatt contributed 23.

Save skipper Ambati Rayudu who scored 54 with the help of five fours and a six, none of the reputed batsmen made any significant contribution. Among the top nine, only Aditya Waghmode reached 20 apart from Rayudu.

The best part about the partnership between Vahora and Bhatt was that they defied the Tamil Nadu pace trio of Jagannathan Kaushik, Sunil Sam and Yomahesh for 30 overs. Both Kaushik and Sam got two wickets apiece.

Brief Scores: Tamil Nadu 191 for 9 (Ambati Rayudu 54, Murtuza Vahora 45 batting, V Yomahesh 5 for 25).
