    Ranji Trophy, Group C, Round 8, Day 1: Assam reduce Andhra to 214 for eight

    Guwahati: Assam bowlers put up a great performance to reduce Andhra to 214 for eight at the end of the first day's play in their Ranji Trophy Group C match here on Saturday. Despite half-centuries by Amol Muzumdar (82 not out) and Bodapati Sumanth (57), Assam managed to take the upper hand after day one.

    Arup Das was the pick of the wicket with impressive figures of three for 56, while J Syed Mohammad (2 for 26) and Abu Nechim (2 for 63) claimed two each.

    After putting Andhra in to bat, the hosts' wrecked havoc, dismissing both the openers - Murumulla Sriram and Prasanth Kumar - for a duck each, as well as the one-down batsman Syed Sahabuddin (10).

    However, Sumanth and Muzumdar came up with solid resistance and helped steady the boat. The duo shared a 80-run stand for the fourth wicket before Sumanth departed for a 110-ball 57, studded with 10 fours. Muzumdar and Pawar put on a 65-run stand for the seventh wicket to take Andhra past 200-run mark.

    At stumps, Muzumdar had remained not out and at the other end Shaik Basha was yet to open his account.

    Brief scores: Andhra: 214 for eight in 74 overs (Amol Muzumdar batting 82, Bodapati Sumanth 57; Arup Das 3 for 56, Syed Mohammad 2 for 26, Abu Nechim 2 for 63).

    Kerala vs Jharkhand:

    In Malappuram, India discard S Sreesanth took four wickets as Kerala bowled out Jharkhand for a mere 120 and then scored 165 for one on the opening day. Apart from paceman Sreesanth, who gave away just 28 runs in his 10.1 overs, Sandeep Warrier (2 for 38) and CP Shahid (2 for 13) took two wickets apiece after Kerala invited visitors to bat.

    Jharkhand Wicket-keeper Shiv Gautam was the highest scorer for them with his 30-run knock while Rameez Nemat (21) Sunny Gupta (20) were the notable scorer. Kerala then made a strong reply, ending the day a comfortable 165 for one after losing opener A Hegde in the first ball of the innings.

    V Jagadessh (77) and Robert Fernandez (86) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day.

    Jammu and Kashmir vs Himachal Pradesh:

    In Jammu, paceman Vikramjeet Malik returned with a five-wicket haul to bundle out Jammu and Kashmir for a paltry 175 and put Himachal Pradesh.

    Malik scalped five wickets for 41 runs, while Rishi Dhawan and left-arm spinner Mukesh Sharma picked up two wickets apiece to wreck havoc on J&K batsmen.

    Sent into bat, Ram Dayal top-scored for J&K with an unbeaten 35, while Owais Shah and wicket-keeper Obaid Haroon made 34 and 33 respectively. At stumps, Himachal Pradesh were on 26 for no loss after eight overs in reply to J&K's first innings total of 175.

    Captain Aakash Chopra was unbeaten on 16 while giving him company was Varun Sharma on eight.

    Brief scores: Jammu and Kashmir: 175 all out in 79.5 overs (Ram Dayal 35 not out; Vikramjeet Malik 5 for 41); Himachal Pradesh: 26 for no loss in eight overs.
