Sri Lanka vs India, 2nd ODI: as is happened

Sri Lanka innings:20th over: Sri Lanka 139 for 1 So that’s it. Sri Lanka win the second ODI by nine wickets to level the series 1-1 going into the third match in Colombo on Saturday. That is a crushing defeat. India were abject, bowled out for 138 in 33.3 overs and then conceding victory inside 20 overs. With the ball, Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews took three wickets apiece and then in the run-chase Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan helped themselves to half-centuries. India have plenty to ponder. That’s it from us. See you Saturday!17th over: Sri Lanka 121 for 1 India get a wicket, but its too late. Tillakaratne Dilshan, who reached 50 in the previous over, falls to an attempted sweep shot. He goes hard at a ball from R Ashwin and gets an inside edge that pops up for MS Dhoni to run forward and collect. Sri Lanka are well on track for victory. Upul Tharanga is batting on 46. Tillakaratne Dilshan c Dhoni b Ashwin 50 (49 balls)13th over: Sri Lanka 100 for 0 Sri Lanka’s 100 is up. The openers are looking solid after the dinner break. Upul Tharanga continues to drive with panache; there was a scorching offdrive against Zaheer Khan that sped down the ground in the 12th over. Tillakaratne Dilshan has upped his strike rate with some fierce cut shots. It’s all one-way traffic in Hambantota. Just not India’s day.9th over: Sri Lanka 64 for 0 Dilshan comes alive with 13 runs off Umesh Yadav’s first over. Two cracking fours in that over. Sri Lanka are well placed as the dinner break is taken. Do join us in about 35 minutes from now. 8th over: Sri Lanka 51 for 0 Tillakaratne Dilshan hasn’t timed much off the middle of the bat – in this over he attempts to pull a short ball from Irfan Pathan and gets a thick edge off the bat and onto his shoulder that flies wide of Virender Sehwag at slip. Upul Tharanga looks far more confident. He’s been under pressure to perform as an opener in 2012 and so far has replied with a punchy innings. His offside play has been especially eye-catching. Ends the over by slapping a wide ball into the gap at cover for a boundary that raises Sri Lanka’s 50. Zaheer Khan and Irfan haven’t given away a whole lot but there haven’t been enough wicket-taking deliveries. Eight wides haven’t helped. Sehwag’s earlier drop of Dilshan could prove very costly. 4th over: Sri Lanka 18 for 0 Sehwag drops Dilshan for the second match in a row. That's a clanger. Dilshan flashed hard at a ball from Irfan Pathan outside off stump and got a thick edge, but Sehwag at first slip fails to hold on above his head. In and out. Poor. Meanwhile, Upul Tharanga has played some peachy drives. India innings:34th over: India 138 all out Gautam Gambhir is out and India succumb for 138 in 33.3 overs. On 65, he opens the face and tries to steer a widish ball from Lasith Malinga to third man but Kumar Sangakkara dives to his left and plucks the catch. Deplorable from India. Sri Lanka need 139 to level the series. 33rd over: India 136 for 9 Nine down. Pragyan Ojha pokes at one outside off stump from Angelo Mathews and nicks to Kumar Sangakkara behind the stumps. Gambhir was farming the strike a lot when he should have been hogging it. India have plenty of overs left. No harm in eating up deliveries. Aim should be to bat out the overs. Odd. The last man walks in – Umesh Yadav. Sees off three balls to end the over, including the sixth which runs away for four leg byes. Pragyan Ojha c Sangakkara b Mathews 5 (18 balls) 30th over: India 123 for 8 Gambhir has crossed 50. Ojha looks confident. India's previous lowest in Sri Lanka was 103 in 2010. They've passed that. Next is 146 in Dambulla in 2008. Can they cross it?26th over: India 113 for 8 This is all going downhill fast. Now Rangana Herath picks up Zaheer Khan for 2, plodding forward to a delivery that spins in and hits him on the front leg in front of the stumps. Confident shout and it’s given. Replays show the ball would have hit leg stump. Gambhir look on from the other end. He’s on 49. Zaheer Khan lbw b Rangana Herath 2 (4)24th over: India 107 for 7 India are under the pump right now. It's difficult to imagine that there is now any hope left for them in this match. However, Aswhin has shown great resolve ever since his arrival. It's not a matter of winning or losing this match anymore. It's now about getting up a respectable total and for that both Gambhir and Ashwin will have to knuckle down. Just as we write this, Ashwin runs himself out. The end is nigh for India with this.Ravichandran Ashwin run out 21 (15)20th over: India 79 for 6 Lasith Malinga returns and accounts for Irfan Pathan. It's a leading edge as the left-hander tries to play on the on side. It goes the other way as Thisara Perera takes an easy catch at mid-off. You can't keep Perera out of the picture today. However, there is some drama. The umpire at the non-striker's end suspects it's a no-ball and goes up to the third umpire. However, there is no relief for Irfan as replays show the ball is fine. He has to go. Ravichandran Ashwin is the next man in.Iran Pathan c Perera b Malinga 6 (19)19th over: India 77 for 5 Irfan Pathan has shown great composure in his brief stay. He needs to support Gambhir, who looks as solid as ever. India's lowest total against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka is 103 that came to pass in Colombo in 2008. Right now the question is can India make in excess of 103? Such is the nature of this game. Tables turn in no time. It's been 33 balls since the last boundary. 15th over: India 60 for 5 India in dire straits as captain MS Dhoni also goes back to the pavilion. Angelo Mathews is his perpetrator. He gets a little bit of bounce and Dhoni gives an easy catch to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara while attempting a cut shot. It has already started to look like a lost cause for the team. Mathews has been a perfect foil to Perera. It was his second wicket. His figures read: 5-2-10-2. Isn't it superb? Meanwhile, Irfan Pathan has joined Gautam Gambhir.MS Dhoni c †Sangakkara b Mathews 11 (16) 13th over: India 56 for 4 This period has been very silent for Team India. Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews have bowled with precision. There haven't been loose balls for MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir. Here is one stat: India and Sri Lanka have played one another in 135 ODIs with India winning 71 contests; 51 matches went to the Lankans. 8th over: India 41 for 4 Thisara Perera does it again. Suresh Raina bites the dust as he chops the ball on to his stumps. MS Dhoni joins Gautam Gambhir, and lo and behold, he gets a reprieve off the last ball. Angelo Mathews drops a regulation catch at slip. India are in a tight spot now. A partnership is the need of the hour.Suresh Raina b Perera 1 (5)7th over: India 39 for 3 Here another wicket tumbles for India. Rohit Sharma is at the receiving end this time. Chops an Angelo Mathews delivery on to his stumps. Quite similar to his dismissal in the first match. The Lankans have come back after having seen a flurry of fours at the start of the innings.Rohit Sharma b Mathews 0 (5) 6th over: India 33 for 2 Another wicket-maiden for Perera. He has been outstanding so far. This time he finds a faint edge off last match centurion Virat Kohli's bat as Kumar Sangakkara takes an easy catch behind the wickets. The umpire took some time to raise his finger. Virat Kohli c †Sangakkara b Perera 1 (5)4th over: India 31 for 1 Thisara Perera gets rid of the dangerous Virender Sehwag. Takes the catch off his own bowling. He juggled it a few times in his followthrough but managed to hold on to it. Sehwag had made 96 in the first match and that actually set India on course for a big score. Now the question is can India do it without a big contribution from Sehwag? Virender Sehwag c & b Perera 15 (15) 3rd over: India 31 for 0 Good start by India. Both Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are looking in great touch. Sehwag fetched two fours off Isuru Udana's opening over; Gambhir does the same to Malinga in the next over. The average first innings score here is 291 and India look to go past that. Of 52 matches between these two teams in Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka have won 26, while India 20. Six ties resulted in no result.1st over: India 7 for 0 Lucky stars are surely smiling on MS Dhoni as he wins another toss. In five matches here, the team batting first has been victorious on four occasions. Meanwhile, seven runs come off the first over by Lasith Malinga, five come off the second ball, one run and four overthrows. Surely not the start the Lankans were looking for.2.10 p.m.: MS Dhoni wins the toss, India will bat first. India are going in with an unchanged side, says the captain. While there is one change for Sri Lanka: younger pacer Isuru Udana gets a game, his maiden ODI. The pitch today is slightly grassy but is likely to favour the batsmen like it did in the first match, says Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene. Squads:India: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(w/c), Irfan Pathan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan OjhaSri Lanka: Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara(w), Dinesh Chandimal, Mahela Jayawardene(c), Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath, Isuru Udana1.40 p.m.: Hello and welcome to the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka at Hambantota. MS Dhoni's men were quite convincing during their 24-run win in the first ODI and they will look to do the same today. India are likely to field the same side that played in the first match, but Sri Lanka will be without the services of allrounder Nuwan Kulasekara who has been ruled out of the series on account of a groin injury. Stay tuned to know more in the build-up to the match.
