Virender Sehwag rubbishes T20 retirement reports

New Delhi: Virender Sehwag has rubbished reports that he intends to quit playing Twenty20 internationals. A report in the New Delhi-based Daily Mail on Thursday quoted a senior BCCI official as saying that Sehwag approached the BCCI with a request not to be selected for Twenty20s as he wished to focus on Test and ODI cricket, but the India opener has denied this. "Another baseless story being run! I have not requested to be rested for any match in any format of the game! Fingers crossed, raring to go!" tweeted Sehwag. Daily Mail had quoted a senior BCCI official as saying: "He has informed the board that he doesn't want to play T20 Internationals anymore and would like to concentrate on the longer versions. He cited fitness and the rigours of T20 cricket as the reason behind his decision. The daily also quoted the BCCI official as denying that Sehwag's being left out of India's playing XI so the team could accommodate three specialist spinners against Australia in the recent ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka was behind the 34-year-old’s decision. "He is experienced enough to realise the needs of the team and he isn't someone who would question the decision of the team management. Only a self-centred player would do that," said the official, who also confirmed that Sehwag would keep playing for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. When contacted by Cricketnext, Roger Binny and Vikram Rathour, two members of India's new selection committee, refused to comment. Sehwag’s form and fitness has been a concern for some time. His last Test century came in November 2010, but outside the subcontinent that date extends back to January 2008. Since the 2011 World Cup final he has played just 13 ODIs, with only two significant innings – a double-century against West Indies at home and 96 in Sri Lanka. In last month’s World Twenty20 he tallied 54 runs in three matches at an average of 18 and in the recent Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa he scored 22, 52 and 0 for Daredevils.
