Yuvraj offered land in Punjab for sports academy

Chandigarh: Following in cricketer Virender Sehwag’s footsteps, who has a cricket academy and school in Jhajjar, Haryana, Yuvraj Singh is all set to open a sports academy in Punjab. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday offered to allot 20 acres of land near Chandigarh to Yuvraj Singh for setting up a “world-class” sports academy. Yuvraj was accompanied by his mother Shabnam Singh when they called on Badal at his official residence in Chandigarh. Badal also spoke on cancer with Yuvraj Singh. Badal lost his wife Surinder Kaur to cancer in 2011. Badal belongs to the Muktsar district in Punjab’s Malwa area, which is a hot bed for cancer suspected to be caused due to excessive use of pesticides, herbicides and potent chemical fertilizers and also irrigation with polluted canal water. Badal enquired about his well-being and wished him speedy recovery and best of health. The Chief Minister also told Yuvraj that the state government had already set up a sports school at Ghudha in Bathinda district to impart quality education and sports training to the youth to enable them to exhibit their talent at national as well as international tournaments.“If we have the land, we would like to set up something that is not yet there in India,” said Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj has put forth his proposal to establish a state-of-the-art sports academy near Chandigarh to impart training to budding players in cricket, hockey, golf and tennis, besides boarding and lodging facilities for players.Unlike sports academies and schools where the primary focus is on regular classroom curriculum and sports is an add-on facility included in co-curricular skills, Yuvraj aims to focus on developing sporting skills and imparting education that facilitates the sports and also helps in rounding off a student’s personality.Watch: Yuvraj offered 20 acres land for sports academy in Punjab
