AFC Challenge: Medeira blames players for exit

Kathmandu: Savio Medeira expressed displeasure with the Indian contingent after his side were thrashed 4-0 by DPR Korea in their final match of the AFC Challenge Cup 2012 in Group B on Tuesday.

"Everyone saw it, the team lacked spirit and there was no one willing to show responsibility, and as a coach it's very disheartening to see those things in the field," said the Indian coach, letting out his frustration.

India ended their group phase campaign with the worst record of conceding eight goals in three matches while they accompany Nepal in the segment of goals scored.

The India head coach further claimed that he was left baffled by the performance of the young squad.

"This is a young team but these players need to learn from their senior predecessors on how to play serious football," Medeira said.

"In the last SAFF Championships, the team was doing well but in this competition, I don't know why, the feeling of responsibility was not there."

To aggravate matters, Sunil Chhetri will be back in the medical room with an ankle injury that he picked in the last match, besides Reisangmi Vashum injuring his calf.

Meanwhile, it is believed that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) technical director Rob Baan has been entrusted with the responsibility to decide on who shall replace Savio Medeira as India coach.

Reliable sources suggest that a foreign coach is set to take over the reigns with the senior team, as an extension to the Goan's stint that ends in the month of May remains highly unlikely.
