Tata Hexa Automatic Off-Road Review: Can it Handle the Heat?
Tata Hexa's automatic transmission equipped variant has become popular over time, but can it match its manual transmission equipped sibling's off road capability?

We drove the Tata Hexa before it's launch in October last year and the car had left us impressed in almost all aspects. The only thing that was left to see back then was the price and Tata Motors hit the nail on its head by launching at a starting price tag of Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
As time passed by, the automatic transmission equipped variant has come out to be quite a popular choice among buyers. While it may offer the ease of driving in typical city scenarios, it misses out on the extensive off-road package that its manual transmission equipped sibling gets.
So just how good is the automatic transmission powered variant when it comes to going off-road? Check out the video below.
The XM and XT variants of the Tata Hexa come with the tried and tested 2.2-litre Varicor 400 diesel engine which was first seen on the Tata Safari Storme. It is capable of producing 156 PS of power and a mouth-watering 400 Nm of torque – delivered as low as 1700-2700 RPM. The one we tested came with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
All four wheels come with disc brakes and the ground clearance on offer is 200mm. The pretty-looking wheels are 19-inch in size which wears 235/55 19-inch radial tyres.
The front suspension is a double-wishbone type with coil springs whereas the back end of the car gets a coil spring type 5 link rigid axle unit.
The automatic transmission equipped variant will get the job done in most regular driving scenarios as we saw while testing the car comprehensively at a dedicated off-road obstacle course. But if it is hardcore off-roading you crave, then the manual transmission equipped variant is the one to go for.
