Tesla is known for manufacturing some of the most frugal electric cars on Earth, with an all-electric range as high as 535 km in the Tesla Model S. In fact, the new Tesla Model 3 is not far behind with an electric range of 500 km. But none of the above mentioned cars can match the new record set in a Tesla Model S 100D, which managed to run a complete 1078 km on a single charge, before running out of juice.

The record was set by Tesla Owners Italy, an independent group of people who own Tesla cars in Italy. The fun part is, Elon Musk took to Twitter to congratulate the team at Tesla Owners Italy for its accomplishment and confirm the record set. Interestingly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted about the possibility of churning 1000 km out of the Tesla Model S, on a single charge "with the right tyres."

Seems like he was right as the group’s record by certified by a notary, who sealed the charging port before the drive began. A stock 100-kWh Model S, baring a set of low-rolling-resistance tyres was driven over the course of 29 hours, averaging about 25 miles per hour. The end result was a new record mileage of 1,078 km (almost 670 miles), double the official EPA-estimated 335 miles range.

A total of 5 drivers got to drive the car with the AC off and the car consumed a total of 98.4 kWh of electricity. "The driving was made simple by the semi-autonomous driving system, which helped us to keep a constant speed in the middle of the lane," said Rosario Pingaro, one of the team's five drivers.
The previous world record of maximum EV mileage of 560 miles on a single charge was also set on a Tesla Model S P100D.
