One of the problems for MEA in the middle of the Doklam standoff with China is the acute shortage of fluent Mandarin speakers at the decision-making level.

The Joint Secretary East Asia who is the points person for all things China until last week was Pradeep Rawat, someone who doesn’t speak Mandarin.

JS East Asia is a very high profile post occupied in the past by the likes of Anil Wadhwa who retired as our Ambassador in Rome & Gautam Bambawale who is the current High Commissioner in Pakistan. Rawat’s performance has been underwhelming to say the least.

He was finally changed last week and a new man comes with stellar Mandarin credentials. Pranay Verma was Vajpayee’s interpreter between 2000 and 2004. He has served in Beijing and Hong Kong. He has been in the Department of Atomic Energy since 2014.
