Political circles in Dehradun are abuzz with reports of a high-value transaction carried out by an MLA just before the midnight launch of demonetisation last month.

The Uttarakhand unit of the Aam Aadmi Party got a whiff of it and reportedly wrote to Chief Minister Harish Rawat, alleging that the said lawmaker bought gold worth Rs 1.5 crore using old currency notes from a jeweller in the city’s tony Rajpur Road. Word is that the entire transaction was recorded on CCTV cameras.

Sensing an opportunity ahead of assembly elections next year, Rawat was quick to order an inquiry by a special investigation team of the state police. The SIT’s findings, scheduled to be submitted by next week, may now be used by the ruling Congress to its advantage in the coming days.
