New Delhi: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake jolted the National Capital Region at 8:49 pm on Wednesday.

According to Dehradun Meteorological Centre director Bikram Singh, the epicenter was reported at 30.4 latitude north and 79.1 latitude east in which Rudraprayag district falls. The depth of the quake was 30 km.




There were no immediate reports of any injury or destruction but people in several districts of Uttarakhand ran out of their homes in panic, said officials.

This is the second earthquake in Uttarakhand in the past 24 hours. On Tuesday, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was reported in the state. Uttarakhand, a part of the Himalayan region, falls under a high seismic zone.

Tremors were felt in Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and parts of Punjab.
