KOZHIKODE: A BJP worker died of injuries at the Kozhikode Medical College early on Monday, after he was hacked by unidentified assailants at his house in Payyoli on Sunday. Manoj, 38, was attacked around 9.30pm on Sunday by a 25-member group of masked assailants. Reports said that some of them stood guard to the house while the others entered the house and hacked him in front of his mother and wife. They then laid siege to the house and threatened neighbours who had gathered after hearing the commotion.
Manoj was taken to the Kozhikode Medical College late on Sunday night but was pronounced dead early on Monday. Payyoli SI George N D said that the assailants were yet to be identified and were suspected to be activists of the CPM. Investigations are going on, he added.
Manoj was the secretary of the Payyoli panchayat unit of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh. He worked abroad for a short time before returning home and taking up a job as an auto rickshaw driver. He is survived by mother Leela, wife Pushpa and daughters Arya and Nanda. Hundreds of people arrived at his house to pay their last respects. BJP state general secretary K P Sreesan, national working committee members P K Krishnadas and M T Ramesh were among them.
