Chashme Buddoor: Your guide to the popular brands of the 80s

Who can forget the popular Chamko scene from the 1981 cult film 'Chashme Buddoor' where a simple salesgirl Neha (Deepti Naval) steps into a bacherlor's pad and gives Siddharth (Farooque Sheikh) a demonstration of the new detergent powder. Such is the popularity of the 'Ms Chamko' scene that it has more or less become the reference point for Sai Paranjype's 1981 film.
Bringing out the marketing strategy of the 1980s when door-to-door sales worked for the companies, 'Chashme Buddoor' very subtly brings out the endorsement culture and talks about the popular brands of that time. From cigarettes to bikes to apparels, the film doesn't shy away from screaming aloud the brands in most of its scenes. Here are a few brands that will not escape your eyes in the cult 'Chashme Buddoor'.
Gold cigarette: The film begins with the three friends listening to a Mehdi Hassan record and puffing Gold cigarette. Touted as the cheap cigarette brand that college students can afford, Gold is put forth as the readily available and popular brand of that time. Omi (Rakesh Bedi) and Jomo (Ravi Baswani) often visit Lallan miyaan's (Saeed Jaffrey) shop to buy 'hamara' packet. While Gold is touted as the popular cigarette brand, Dunhill on the other hand is the luxury brand which only rich can afford. Siddharth (Farooque Sheikh) tells his friends, "Naukri lagne do fir tum dono ko Dunhill pilaunga". (Let me get a job then I will buy you Dunhill).
Tutti-Frutti ice cream: Siddharth and Neha's first date is one of the most interesting scenes of the film and more than the innocent love it's the tutti-frooti ice cream that makes the scene memorable. Siddharth asks the waiter, "Yaha ka kya acha hai"? Waiter replies, "Maahol". Siddharth smiles, "Khaane mei kya acha hai"? Waiter replies, "Tutti-frutti ice cream". Throughout the film, the couple in love only order for tutti-frooti ice cream during their numerous dates.
Rajdoot bike: The three friends take on their favourite ride, a Rajdoot bike, on their look out for new girls in their locality. Jomo tries hard to impress a girl with his two wheels and takes her on a ride to Lodhi garden. Though the bike often refuses to work but the three still love their Rajdoot.
Adidas: While the three friends are often seen borrowing clothes from each other in the film, but it is the upper-middle class that flaunts the expensive Adidas brand in 1980s. Neha's brother never settles for anything less than an Adidas shoes and Adidas track pants. Whenever you see him on screen, he is mostly in Adidas.
