'Chennai Express' to 'Krrish 3': The biggest box office wins of 2013
The popular perception of Bollywood is that it produces films that are primarily meant to provide entertainment.
New Delhi: One of the major parameters to judge a film's appeal is its box-office performance. The Hindi film industry becomes a bunch of naive people when it comes to choose one between the critical acclaim and commercial success. The popular perception of Bollywood is still that it produces films that are primarily meant to provide entertainment. Vidya Balan very famously said it in 'The Dirty Picture', so we decided to judge a film on the basis of its performance at the ticket window as well. In short, this is a list of films that have made big money at the box-office.
Chennai Express: The rivalry among the Khans is an old tale in Bollywood. From the filmmakers to fans, everyone has an opinion to share whenever the discussion about a particular Khan's supremacy pops up. Salman Khan was dominating the box-office since two years, and Shah Rukh Khan was waiting for a right opportunity to make his presence felt in a grand way. His collaboration with director Rohit Shetty gave him the chance to dominate the scenario. As per trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film earned close to Rs 227 crore in India. It also became the first film to break into the Rs 100 crore club in just 4 days.
Krrish 3: Though there are several views about this Hrithik Roshan starrer film's performance, but it is undoubtedly one of the top grossing ventures of 2013. Hrithik Roshan's toned body and smartly edited action sequences fetched the film a fantastic opening. It also crossed the Rs 100 crore mark within 4 days, and went on to collect Rs 244 cr overall. However, some trade pundits believe that the figures of film's earning are exaggerated.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani: The kind of opening 'YJHD' received was completely unexpected. Ranbir Kapoor was seen as a big player, but nobody anticipated him to emerge as a challenger to the mighty Khans. At one point of time, 'YJHD' appeared to drown the records of 'Ek Tha Tiger' and '3 Idiots', but it stopped at Rs 188.57 crore mark.
Grand Masti: Any publicity is good publicity. Who cares if the dialogues are sexually charged or full of innuendos, all the audience wanted was a hormonal rush. Against all expectations, Indra Kumar's sleazy film raked in good moolah. It took the film 23 days to reach the Rs 100 cr mark, but it ultimately became the first adult film to touch this line. After 'Grand Masti' and 'Krrish 3', Vivek Oberoi has got a new lease of life.
Ram Leela: Slowly and steadily, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has become a smart investor. The film was promoted well and thus it was expected to open at high note, but such films do need meat to maintain the momentum. Deepika Padukone is the person of the moment and she didn't put a wrong foot in 2013. 'Ram Leela' was the showcase of her stardom as Ranveer Sngh is still a newcomer. Finally, 'Ram Leela' became a Rs 100 cr film on the 10th day of its box-office run. Box Office India said that the film grossed approximately Rs 108 crore.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra took a risk with a story that didn't have anything new to reveal. The real life story of legendary athlete Milkha Singh was known to everyone, but Farhan Akhtar's earnest acting made the film engaging. Farhan's physique made the heads turn and Prasoon Joshi's lyrics fascinated the listeners. The critics debated the value of the film, but the governments of different states looked influenced by the film as it was declared tax free in many states. 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' gathered the required pace after one week and eventually ended up in accumulating Rs 108.93 crore as per Taran Adarsh.
Race 2: Abbas-Mastan's stylish film was blasted by the reviewers left right and centre, but the common movie goers supported them. Deepika Padukone's glamour quotient ruled the box-office and it earned around Rs 100 crore.
Aashiqui 2: Mohit Suri and his music composers were under tremendous pressure to deliver a good album, and thankfully they didn't disappoint. The film made Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur overnight stars, and Arijit Singh became the latest sensational voice. 'Sun raha hai na tu' is the new love anthem now. All these factors in association with a brilliant promotional strategy made the film touch the Rs 100 crore mark.
