BERHAMPUR: A minor girl was on Friday rescued by police from the marriage mandap. The girl, Minati Singh, was to be married off to a man thrice her age. The groom has been identified as one Kesab Thakur (38) of Jamaipur under Kanpur police limits in Uttar Pradesh.

Getting a whiff of the ongoings in the Trimurty Temple Bada Bazar police here rushed to the spot, rescued the girl and seized marriage materials and clothes.

They also detained her parents, two mediators and the groom. However, Minati's parents, Congress and Promodini Jena, denied the marriage claiming that she was to be sent to a relatives' house at Kanpur.

It is being alleged that the girl was sold for Rs 20,000, however, police is yet to confirm this.

Meanwhile, the girl was sent to Child Line office in the city for counselling. After completion of the process, she would be sent back to police for further course of action, said Sriram of Childline.
