BANGALORE: After a year of failed attempts to implement welfare schemes, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) handed over a scholarship cheque of Rs 10 lakhs to B K Naveen Raj, to pursue higher education in abroad.
Raj, who became the first of the beneficiaries, is from the Schedule Caste Community. Speaking to media persons, Raj said that he found out about the existence of such scholarship programmes only when he went inquiring for educational loan to a nationalised bank. "When I found out about the scholarship programme, I came to the Palike and filled out the necessary applications", he shared. He said that the money would help him fund his tuition fees and also the accommodation costs. Urban Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar issued the cheque in the presence of Mayor Sharadamma, Deputy Mayor S Harish and BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah.
He also said that he would be completing the visa formalities within a week's time. "I am happy that a student has availed this provision, but I would like more students to come forward", Suresh Kumar said and shared that Rs 7 crore was earmarked for this purpose. Sharadamma said that she was delighted to help a student from her community. Raj will head to London to pursue Masters in Computer Animation at Bedfordshire University.
