Gurgaon: Two five-year-old sisters died of heat and suffocation after being locked inside a car for over two hours in Jamalpur Village near Pataudi on the outskirts of Gurgaon.

The twins, Harsha and Harshita, were staying at their grandparents’ house and had gone near the vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, to play with newborn puppies. Around 4 pm on Tuesday, the family realised that the girls were missing and started searching for them.

“The girls were found unconscious in the car and were rushed to a nearby hospital. They were declared brought dead by the doctors,” said a police officer.

Doctors said the girls may have become unconscious due to the heat and died.

The girls’ father, Govind, works in the Army and is currently posted in Meerut. The girls were supposed to go to Meerut on Wednesday, where they had been enrolled in a school.

An officer said as the car was old, the locks were not functioning properly and the girls could not open the doors.

Police said investigations are being carried out and there seems no be no foul play in the incident. The bodies were handed over to the family and the girls were cremated on Wednesday.
