Fraudster offering Kochi metro rail jobs nabbed

KOCHI: In a joint operation, the Shadow Police and the central police have nabbed a fraudster who collected Rs 75 lakh from several people promising them jobs in the Kochi Metro Rail project.
The arrested is Rajiv Menon, 41, who claimed to be the national secretary of the Trinamool Congress. He was taken into custody from a luxury flat in Marine Drive on the basis of a complaint from Udayakumar, a Kozhikode native.
The police suspect that the accused was involved in various frauds in several parts of the country, mainly South India.
The police said that Udayakumar got acquainted with Rajiv Menon from Thiruvananthapuram two years ago. Rajiv Menon claimed that he was the national secretary of the Trinamool Congress and that he can provide jobs in Metro Rail project using his connection with former Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Rajiv Menon collected Rs 58 lakh from many people through Udayakumar. Similarly, he collected Rs 17 lakh from five persons through Ravindran, a Parapanangadi native.
According to the police, the amount varied according to various posts in the Metro Rail project. The police suspect that he may have trapped more people in this manner. Rajiv was living in a Rs 1-crore flat in Marine Drive and has property in other states also.The police said he was operating through a website claiming that he was Dr Rajiv Menon, organising secretary of Trinamool Congress, national president of the Bharatiya Railway Mazdoor Union (BRMU), Technical Employees Association of Railways (TEAR) and All-India Technical Employees Federation.
The arrest was made by Special Branch Assistant Commissioner M N Ramesh, Ernakulam Assistant Commissioner Sunil Jacob, Central CI Suneesh Babu, SI Ananthlal and Shadow Police SI Nizar Muhammad.
The accused was produced before Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody.
