CUTTACK: With dengue spreading to more districts in the State, the Orissa High Court on Friday directed the Government to set up a high-powered committee to monitor the situation so as to contain the outbreak. Expressing concern over the increasing incidence of the vector-borne viral disease in the districts, a division bench of Justices B P Das and M M Das directed the Government to ensure that the situation does not worsen into an epidemic.
The directive came in response to a petition filed by amicus curiae P R Das seeking urgent measures to combat and contain the spread of dengue in the State. The court asked the State Health Secretary to submit a report on the steps taken to manage the outbreak and contain the spread of the disease to new areas.
The Bench also instructed the State Government to issue circulars to all the doctors serving in the Medical College and Hospitals, district headquarters hospitals and other peripheral healthcare centres  not to leave their places of postings. The direction assumes significance as three-day holidays lie ahead. Medical services as well as diagnostic facilities should be offered round-the-clock.
The court also took note of the absence of diagnostic facilities at the VSS Medical at Burla. Only the SCB Medical at Cuttack MKCG Medical at Berhampur are equipped to carry out Elisa tests to diagnose the disease.
The court directed the Government to install testing equipment at VSS Medical immediately and despatching mobile diagnostic units to the affected pockets in different districts, the amicus curiae said.
