New Delhi: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq courted controversy on Thursday after he congratulated the Pakistan cricket team for beating England in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy.

“As we were finishing taraweeh, could hear the fire crackers bursting, well played team #Paksitan. Best of luck for the finals!” tweeted the separatist leader.

Pakistan stunned the much fancied England team to reach their first ever Champions Trophy final as the men in green won the match with eight wicket in hand, chasing down the total of 212 with 77 balls remaining.

Pakistan will play either India or Bangladesh in the final, scheduled on Jun 18, 2017.

Mirwaiz, 44, is a separatist leader as the chairman of the Awami Action Committee, one of the two key factions of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.
