New Delhi: India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Syed Akbaruddin's Twitter account was hacked and later restored on Sunday morning, reported news agency ANI.

Two images, one of the Pakistani flag and the other of the neighbouring country's President Mamnoon Hussain, were posted on the verified Twitter handle of the diplomat.

The 'blue tick', which denotes the verification of an account by the micro-blogging site, had disappeared during the cyber attack. The identity of the hacker(s) is not yet known.

On Sunday, the account was handed back to the diplomat and he tweeted, "I'm back. It will take more than a hack to keep me down. Thanks to @TwitterIndia & many others who helped."

In 2016, a total of 199 government websites were hacked in India, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had told the Parliament. In fact, more than 700 websites under the Indian government have been hacked from 2013 to 2016.
