HYDERABAD: The CPM has made it clear that the Centre cannot delay its decision on Telangana anymore.
"Why is the Centre not taking any action on Justice BN Srikrishna Committee report so far? Why the delay on Telangana issue?" CPM general secretary Prakash Karat has asked.
Speaking to newsmen here on Wednesday, the CPM leader said he Food Security bill brought in by the Centre had several 'objectionable' features and demanded major amendments be made to it. The Prime Minister should realise that the UPA was responsible if 42 pc of children in the country do not have access to nutritious food.
Voicing strong opposition to the decision to allow 100 per cent FDI in single retail, he threatened to launch a nationwide agitation if the government goes ahead with its move to permit it in multibrand retail.
He alleged that the UPA was using back door methods to bring in multibranded market under retail sector. He said after the elections in five states are over, the UPA would take a decision on this issue.
"Our party has decided that if the government goes ahead with this decision, we shall launch a countrywide movement to stop such retail chains opening their shops and supermarkets in India," Karat said.
Maintaining that the Lokpal bill brought in by the Centre is not effective, he said Centre should prepare the bill by respecting federal structure of the country and its spirit. He demanded changes like ensuring independence of Lokpal and the antigraft ombudsman having an investigative machinery.
The CPM leader said Lokpal selection committee should be appointed by the Supreme Court.
