Karnataka government likely to limit multiplex movie ticket price at Rs 120

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is mulling a limit or maximum cap of Rs 120 to be charged on movie tickets in multiplexes. The state has one of the highest ticket prices in the country currently.
The movement to bring a cap on ticket prices was led by Dayal Padmanabha, a Kannada film director and producer, who started a petition on change.org. He along with Kannada film chamber, has also written a letter to the Chief Minister seeking his intervention. He said, "Cut the rate of admission and increase the rate of occupancy. It will help all the movies not only Kannada."
The government is likely to fix Rs 120 as the maximum cap on any ticket. The decision is expected to be announced in the state budget, which is tentatively scheduled for March 18. As a result, multiplexes, which otherwise draw dismal crowds, could see a huge rise in footfalls, keeping the box office busy.
Most movie goers feel that it's a good move. According to reports, presently the occupancy rate of multiplexes in the city ranges between 38% and 50%. The average multiplex ticket prices are around Rs 250 to Rs 300. The multiplex owners could feel the pinch since real estate prices are exorbitant in the city and their return on investment could get adversely impacted.
According to sources the state government is also set to follow the model of Tamil Nadu on ticket pricing. A cap on ticket prices is expected to see an increase in footfalls and will create a equal platform for every filmmaker to showcase their talent, the backers of the move say.
