Patna: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said that his party would consider supporting Governor Ram Nath Kovind's nomination as the President of India.

Nitish himself went to meet the Governor on Monday after National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced his name for the top post.

After a short meeting, Nitish praised him for supporting state government's initiatives towards the development of the state. "We have excellent working relationship with him ever since he was appointed the Governor. I am happy that He has been nominated for the President's post. It was a courtesy call and I congratulated him," Bihar Chief Minister said.

He even hinted at supporting his candidature, saying that his Party Janata Dal (United) would consider to support him.

Nitish also informed that he has talked to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad Yadav and the Congress president Sonia Gandhi about the presidential election, but did not elaborate further. However, he said that the decision would be arrived at soon.

On the other hand, senior BJP leader Sushil Modi urged Mahagathbandhan leaders to support Kovind.

Earlier, Nitish had said that the BJP should come up with a name and try to reach a consensus with the opposition. After declaring Kovind's name, the NDA has now lobbed the ball into his court.

Former Chief Minister Jeetan Ram Manjhi is also of the view that the RJD and JD(U) should support a Dalit leader such as Kovind for the top post.
