Kochi: While the entire world celebrated International Women's Day with great fervour, Shiv Sena workers on Tuesday 'chased away' young couples from Kochi's Marine drive as a mark of protest against the spread of western culture.

Lathi-wielding Sena workers reportedly threatened and shooed away girls and boys who were sitting at Marine Drive. Even, the couples were asked to leave the place immediately or face consequences.

Local policemen turned mute spectators as about 20 Sena workers attacked youngsters on the pretext of women safety during a protest march in Kochi.

However, the Assistant Police Commissioner of Ernakulam has warned that the accused will not be spared and strict action will be taken against those who took law into their own hands.

He also made it clear that probe will be initiated if policemen deployed at the spot acted swiftly or not.

Kochi Mayor Soumini Jain condemned the incident and asked the police to take strong action against the accused.
