CHENNAI: The city police have arrested a man - a previous offender - in connection with the murder of a grocery storeowner in Kodungaiyur on Friday.
Police said that the gang of four - two had earlier committed offences - had planned to rob the store owner for close to a month and had even made an attempt the day before the murder. They arrested Mahesh Samy, who confessed that he along with three others Manimaran, Srinivasan and Munnusamy had intercepted the Rajaratinam (52) before attacking him with a branch on Wednesday morning. The gang stole Rs 34,500 and fled the scene and hid.
After receiving information that the store owner died and that police were on the hunt for them, the men had decided to surrender before the court and had gone to the Madras HC and later to Egmore Court as they could not find their lawyer.
The gang left the court after finding many policemen on the premises. Police however caught Mahesh at Egmore. Teams have gone to Tiruvallur district to nab the others and recover the cash. Mahesh was involved in a hurt case in Pulianthope and Manimaran was involved in about seven cases.
