New Delhi: Renowned physicist Professor Yash Pal passed away at his residence in Noida on Monday evening. He was 90.

He was recently admitted to hospital over some age-related problems.

Yash Pal was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2013.

The scientist and academic gained popularity in the 90s for hosting ‘Turning Point’ a science-based programme in Doordarshan.

Yashpal was born in Jhang district of Pakistan in 1926. He began his career at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. He was member of the ‘cosmic rays group’ at the institute. He did his PhD from Boston’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked at the Tata facility till 1983.

From 1973 to 1981, he was the Director at Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad. Yash Pal was appointed as the Chief Consultant of the Planning Commission in 1983-84. He was later appointed as the Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC).​
