BELGAUM: May be on land, in water or air, wherever technology exists in the world, it has some or the other connection with the industries of Belgaum.
The industries in Belgaum, though neglected by the governments and plagued by lack of proper facilities, have been outstanding in manufacturing exclusive products which have brought laurels to the country.
Known as a hub of foundries, Belgaum has now grown in other industrial sectors too, attracting the attention of several countries. The industries here are now getting recognised globally for quality of their products. Consequently, Belgaum has now carved its own niche in the global market, thanks to skilled workforce and world class products. In fact, these factors have helped the local industries shine despite the lack of proper roads, regular power supply, lack of airport and other facilities.
Servo controls Aerospace India Private Limited (SAIPL) is one among the industries which have made Belgaum proud in many ways.
Established by Deepak and Dinesh Dhadoti in a house garage with a servo valve test setup in 2002, the SAIPL today manufactures core products for aerospace like Actuators, Manifold blocks, Landing gears, Servo valves, Test rigs and Simulators.
Speaking to The New Indian Express, Dinesh Dhadoti said that SAIPL also manufactures hydraulic power pack for helicopter test system with load cell, auto transmission control system and software development for huge 100 HP systems (Caterpillar).
Servo controls is also involved in the manufacture of precision control assemblies for different applications. He said that they have recently come up with various milgrade electronics controllers/ hydraulic system developed for rocket launchers, manufactured exclusively for Indian defence forces.
SAIPL is also engaged in making 6 DOF normally used in the industry for T72 and T90 Tank Turret Gun Trainer.
The company exporting its products to several countries including USA, Germany and Russia.
Hydropack (India) Private Limited
Hydropack (India) Private Limited (HIPL) here manufactures products needed in ships, trains and more. Among hundreds of its products, hydraulic aligners required for ships is the most exclusive one. Many of the company's products can be seen in almost all shipyards of the country, said HIPL Managing Director Sudhir Darekar.
He said that HIPL is exporting its products to about 15 countries. It is the original equipment supplier to companies like Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), TVS Group and L T, he added. HIPL manufactures products like Hydraulic Press and Multiple Tensioning Equipment for nuclear power plants, Hydraulic Gang Operated Jacking System for PSLV (Satellite) launching, heavy duty cylinders for BEML and others.
Allied Founders Private Limited
Allied Founders Private Limited (AFPL) manufactures cast iron and ductile iron products along with machined components which are exported to countries like South Africa, Dubai, France, USA and Germany. AFPL Managing Director Ram Malya said that apart from making products like pump components, valves and elevators, AFPL has recently started the manufacturing of farm equipment.
Belgaum in hall of fame for foundries
Well known for its foundries, Belgaum happens to be number one among the casting producing centres in the state and one among the first ten highest producers of castings in the country.
Having more than 140 foundries in the range from small, medium and large scale industries, Belgaum produces more than one lakh tonnes of casting every year which is valued about more than Rs 500 crore.
It boasts of industries like Ashok Iron Works, Polyhydron, BEMCO and others. These industries manufacture products for major units like Mahindra and Mahindra, Telco, Bajaj, Kirloskar Group, BHEL, Kirloskar Electric, Siemens, Crompton Greeves and others.
Speaking to The New Indian Express, Belgaum Foundry Cluster (BFC) Chairman Ram Bhandare said that over a period of four decades, the foundry industries here have not developed as expected.
He said that lack of infrastructure facilities, advanced testing facilities, pollution and age old technology have become hurdles for Belgaum foundries.
Bhandare said that BFC was formed in 2004 with an objective to support the foundries in and around Belgaum.
He said that it is the only Foundry Cluster in the country and has facility to reclaim the sand to the tune of 10,000 tonnes per month.
Sand reclamation helps the foundry men to save sand. It reduces the purchase of fresh sand and also brings down soil pollution, said Bhandare.
BFC has many other facilities like quality testing laboratory, common tool room facility, common effluent treatment plant and more.
The cluster has been providing training to several foundry men and is instrumental in ensuring that Belgaum has a prominent position when it to foundries. It aims to make Belgaum foundry industry a global sourcing hub for casting and machined components in the coming years, Bhandare explained.
