US begins tweets in Arabic and Farsi
The US does engages governments, but it also wants to engage people directly.

Washington: As part of its strategy to directly reach out to the people across the globe, the United States has started using non-English languages like Arabic and Farsi on social media.

"It's a key element of our plan and our strategy to engage people-to-people around the world," State Department spokesman P J Crowley said.

The US does engages governments, but it also wants to engage people directly.

"And as we use social media, we are also using languages in key parts of the world. So, last week we began tweeting in Arabic, and this week we begin Tweeting in Farsi," Crowley said.

The US embassies around the world have their own Twitter accounts.
"We do employ a number of languages. But obviously, this is a little more targeted," he said in response to a question.
