Having closed its historic Dargan and Milltown wings in 2011 for a 30-million euro modernization, the National Gallery of Ireland will be open to the public once again from June 15.

One of Europe's earliest public art galleries, the National Gallery of Ireland is home to an extensive collection of some of the world's most famous painters. Opened to the general public in 1864, it now houses over 16,300 works of art from early Renaissance to the modern day, and spans across a series of buildings on Dublin's Merrion Square.

Following the renovation of the gallery, works by master painters such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Ruisdael, Vermeer, Gainsborough, Goya, Monet, Gris and Picasso will be showcased in a new presentation. Likewise, the gallery's prestigious Irish art collection will also be back on show. In total, the renovated wings of the gallery will display over 650 artworks.

The renovation period also gave researchers the opportunity to carry out essentail conservation work on over 450 paintings, the most impressive of which is Daniel Maclise's "The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife" (1854), a meticulously detailed picture.

Not only is the artwork presented in a more modern setting, but the 19th century building itself has undergone a dramatic transformation. A courtyard (designed by Heneghen Peng) now exists between the two wings, with a scuplture, "Magnus Modus" by Joseph Walsh, in the center. Key to the redeveloment, a modern energy center has been built under the gallery to invisibly provide essential services. The Dargan wing roof has also been entirely replaced.

The gallery will celebrate its renovation by hosting the exhibition "Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting: Inspiration and Rivalry" from June 17 through September 17, 2017.

The conclusion of this renovation marks a mid-way point for the gallery's Master Development Plan (MDP), for which the next step is a total remodeling of another wing, building extensions, new galleries and new public amenities.
