13 Years of Kal Ho Naa Ho: Lesser Known Facts About SRK-Preity Zinta's Love Story

'Kal Ho Naa Ho', that broke million hearts because of its bitter-sweet lovestory, completes 13 years of its release today. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan, this film made Shah Rukh the most popular actor overseas. Released, when globalisation was at its peak, the film bonded NRIs with their soil.

Wrapped in a tragic love story and friendship the film was an emotional ride for the audience and was said to be inspired from Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Anand'.

To celebrate one of the finest romantic film by Shah Rukh Khan, we list lesser known facts about the movie:

Abhishek Bachchan and Vivek Oberoi were approached for Saif Ali Khan's role.


Preity Zinta's character 'Naina' was written keeping Kareena Kapoor in mind, but actress had demanded a high fee and hence was replaced by Preity Zinta.


Karan Johar complied with international copyright laws and bought the license to the rights to Roy Orbison's 'Pretty Woman' which is featured in the film.

The film was originally going to be shot in Toronto but eventually moved it to New York. However some parts of the song 'Kuch To Hua Hai' in the movie are shot in Toronto.


The modifications and dresses of Jia's dolls were actually made by Preity Zinta the day before the shooting of the scene'.


In the beginning we apparently see Naina running, but Preity Zinta had fallen and injured herself. Nikhil Advani got a model to jog in front of the camera instead.


Anil Mehta, the cinematographer of the movie played Naina's father who appears briefly at the starting of the film.


Karan Johar approached Neetu Singh for the role of Jennifer but that didn't work out. Eventually Jaya Bachchan played the role.


Youssoupha sampled the sad version of 'Kal Ho Na Ho' for his song 'Babylone Zoo'.

Farah Khan is also seen sitting as a customer in Jennifer's Cafe New Delhi


It was the last film to be produced by Yash Johar.


Anaita Shroff Adajania, Vogue magazine's Editor and celebrity stylist did a cameo role in the film. She played 'Geeta', Naina and Rohit's classmate in their MBA course.
