Shivaay Movie Review: Ajay Devgn Is In Every Frame and We Wish He Wasn't

Ajay Devgn, who was last seen in Drishyam, is coming back on the big screen with his own production Shivaay. The actor almost sidestepped his part as the Bollywood's action hero for a wee bit and only took up a simpleton's role in his last film, but with Shivaay, it looks like he's making a comeback to reclaim his title. This film marks an important milestone in Devgn's career as it's his second directorial venture after U Me aur Hum.

The film also stars Erika Kaar, Abigail Eames and Saira Banu's grandniece Sayyeshaa Saigal in key roles.

Considering the fact that this film is clashing with Karan Johar's much-anticipated film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, it'll be interesting to see what lies in the store for the viewers - in terms of plot, acting and direction.

The trailer didn't reveal much about the plot but managed to shed light on the storyline - a father trying to save his daughter from peril. Ever since the trailer was released, much has been written and spoken about the shoot locales; whether or not they've been framed well remains to be seen.

Will Devgn's intense expressions and power-packed action sequences be able to cast a spell on the viewers' mind? Will he be able to re-invent his action-star image? Kriti Tulsiani of News18 is inside the theater to find out.

12:44 PM: Ajay Devgn's action drama #Shivaay clashes with Karan Johar's #AeDilHaiMushkil today!

12:46 PM: Will #AjayDevgn reinvent his action star image with #Shivaay. Stay tuned to find out.

12:48 PM: #Shivaay features @ajaydevgn, @sayyeshaa and #ErikaKaar in lead roles.

12:53 PM: #Shivaay opens with a well shot scene of snow capped mountains and of course, @ajaydevgn lying atop on a snowy mountain.

12:57 PM: #Shivaay: Tattooed with Lord Shiva's matted locks, serpent and trident, @ajaydevgn plays a charismatic mountaineer and a trek guide.

1:01 PM: Woah! #ErikaKaar has a strong hold on Hindi language but the forced Indian-ness in her character is weird. #Shivaay

1:06 PM: Chemistry between Ajay Devgn and Erika Kaar is not too impressive. Not even in their lovemaking scenes. #Shivaay

1:15 PM: To the makers credit, #Shivaay doesn't take much time to establish its plot. In fact, it's pretty fast-paced so far.

1:33 PM: Little Abigail Eames as Gaura doesn't need words to emote, doing her part well. #Shivaay

1:36 PM: Look out for the car chase sequence shot on the streets of Bulgaria. Unbelievable yet enthralling. #Shivaay

1:48 PM: Looks like @ajaydevgn's fans are enjoying the high octane action moves in the theatre. Loud cheers! #Shivaay

1:51 PM: Oh wait. Too much mindless action happening. You'll find yourself laughing amid the neck throat chase. #Shivaay

1:53 PM: It's half time. #Shivaay is pretty much about #AjayDevgn, other actors impersonating as Bulgarians speaking fluent Hindi & snowy mountains.

1:55 PM: Action sequences, at times, are too far stretched to be believable. Sigh. #Shivaay

2:14 PM: Okay. So #Shivaay quickly shifts from a love story to a father trying to save his daughter from peril and trying to expose a Russian mafia.

2:24 PM: Wo toh Superman hai, Batman hai, Spiderman hai: @saurabhshukla_s makes you laugh even in a super-serious scene. #Shivaay

2:26 PM: #ErikaKaar should have stuck to English. This forced Hindi is a bit too much. #Shivaay

2:31 PM: Some scenes of #Shivaay will remind you so much of the Hollywood film #Taken.

2:35 PM: The actor playing one of the crucial members of Mafia is so scary that he's good. His expressions do the talking. #Shivaay

2:37 PM: Vir Das, why? #Shivaay

2:52 PM: Honestly, #Shivaay's plot and subject is not bad, the treatment is. Should have been a lot crisper.

2:58 PM: Yes, #Shivaay is full of action-packed sequences but most of them lack the finesse you would expect from an action-drama.

3:07 PM: Perhaps, shortening the running time of #Shivaay would have made a difference. It's far too stretched.

3:16 PM: #Shivaay is a complete Ajay Devgn show. He's there in almost every frame; no other actor has enough screen time.

3:22 PM: You would only be able to survive #Shivaay if you're a die-hard Ajay Devgn fan.

3:24 PM: #Shivaay begins in Himalayas and ends in Bulgaria; offers you great scenic shots but. That's it.

3:25 PM: Ajay Devgn, snow-capped mountains and fight sequences: Watch #Shivaay to find out which has more screen time.

3:30 PM: #Shivaay is an overdose - of action, melodrama and snowy locales.

3:30 PM: Thank you for staying with us throughout the tweet review of #Shivaay. Stay tuned for more movie updates.
