Actor Vikram Chatterjee is nowhere to be seen and police are unable to contact him for questioning. His lawyer Rajdeep Majumdar has said that his client is not absconding and that if the police want, they can visit his house where he is likely to be. However, the actor wasn't found at his Swinhoe Street house, raising doubts on whether he is trying to evade an arrest. On May 31, Kolkata Police moved the Alipore court seeking the addition of Section 304 of the IPC which is culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a non-bailable offense which could land the actor in jail for up to 10 years.

At present, Chatterjee is out on bail, as the charges slapped against him included bailable offenses under Section 304A - causing death due to negligence, rash driving and damage to public property.

On May 9, Chatterjee had requested the police to contact him through his father, Bijay Chatterjee, instead of communicating directly him. This, however, seems unusual as the police usually communicate directly with the accused and it is only when the accused is a minor that the police takes the guardian route. Meanwhile, Bijay claims he has no clue about Vikram’s whereabouts and that his son is not using a mobile phone. Could this then be seen as non-corporation by the accused in the case?

What is keeping the police away from finding and questioning the actor? His anticipatory bail plea, which was to be heard on June 5, is now likely to be heard only in July. Even though the officials have enough evidence from the video, CCTV footage and bills of the pubs to prove that he was drunk when his car met with an accident, the police are not likely to move for his arrest as yet.

However, what might prove as a hurdle in the cast is that the police had submitted only 0.5ml of blood sample, a quantity lesser than the minimum required to prove whether the actor was drinking, for the forensics testing.

Chatterjee was behind the wheels when his friend and model Sonika Chauhan, who was travelling with him, was killed in the wee hours of the morning in the Lake market area. He had first stated there was a second car that crashed into his Toyota Corolla Altis and then at another press conference, he claimed that he was neither drunk nor driving at a high speed. But soon, a video emerged wherein he was spotted with a drink in his hand along with Sonika and the rest of their friends and that's when the actor admitted to drinking.

Meanwhile, Sonika’s friends ran a social media campaign seeking justice for the model, which has now put further pressure to nab Chatterjee.
