Heavy metal is perhaps the most wrongly judged as a genre of music. People often stereotype it in the wrong ways and that is mostly out of ignorance. Of course stereotypes do have a certain basis to them, but that does not make it true for the entire genre.

Heavy metal is satanic

This is an unfair generalization. Yes, a lot of metal acts have claimed to be devil worshipers and god haters, but that does not in any way mean that every metal band is the same. A lot of heavy metal songs deal with a whole variety of things that are in no way satanic or demonic. They talk about pain and angst and what not.

Heavy metal is not musical

Yet another generalization that is as unfair as it is ignorant. A genre of music that has gone further than the rest into trying to render classical music into guitar licks cannot be called 'not musical'. People also need to understand that heavy metal is a very broad term. A death metal band may sound less melodic as compared to a speed metal or a neo-classical metal act. But hey, haters gonna hate right?

Heavy metal is evil

And so is all of mankind. Metal has talked about futility of wars, about dealing with addiction, about trauma, about death. And of course these things are evil.

Heavy metal is noise

Because it has heavy distorted riffs? Hip Hop can also be considered noise because it is nothing but sped up poetry about who drank more at which club and who did more drugs, right? Again, different bands have a different sound of their own. Some are abrasive, some are melodic. One should not paint the whole genre with the same brush.

Heavy metal vocals are not coherent

Vocals in heavy metal songs range from opera singing to guttural growls. A growl or a shriek is understandably not coherent. But then there are vocalists like Tarja Turunen, Jim Gillette and Bruce Dickinson who sing better than all Indian Idol contestants put together.

Heavy metal is not soothing

It is usually not meant to be. But that doesn't mean it isn't at all. And the best example of that is probably a band called Apocalyptica. Do take the pains to check it out. It's pretty awesome.

Heavy metal is angry and aggressive

Yes, it is often a little aggressive and a pretty angry, but it is also a wide variety of other emotions that narrow minded people probably don't experience.
